The BMW M4 CSL is the extreme factory-installed limited specification of the G82 M4 Coupé, built in 2022-2023 with a production of just 1,000 cars worldwide. It is the first BMW M since 2003 (E46 M3 CSL) to carry the CSL label (Coupé Sport Leichtbau). The package includes factory-installed 550 hp biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six (a substantial 40 hp increase over M4 Competition), factory-installed weight saving of approximately 100 kilograms (through factory-installed carbon factory roof panels, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed carbon factory boot, and factory-installed stripped interior without rear seats), factory-installed exclusively rear-wheel drive with M Steptronic eight-speed automatic (no 4MATIC+, no manual specification), factory-installed Adaptive M suspension with factory-installed CSL-specific settings, and factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. Factory-installed paint colours: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, or factory-installed Alpine White. For pure factory-installed BMW M culture the M4 CSL builds on the E46 M3 CSL heritage. A BMW M4 CSL is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the modern BMW M Leichtbau culture.
BMW M unveiled the G82 M4 CSL in July 2022 as the successor and spiritual heir to the E46 M3 CSL (2003-2004), the last regular M to carry the CSL label. CSL stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau (Coupé Sport Lightweight), a German-language designation first used on the BMW 3.0 CSL from 1972 (the so-called Batmobile). For BMW M the CSL label is reserved for the most extreme, factory-installed weight-saving-oriented regular specifications. The M4 CSL builds explicitly on this heritage: factory-installed weight saving, factory-installed extra power, factory-installed stripped interior, and factory-installed rear-wheel drive exclusively. For collectors the M4 CSL therefore represents a substantially emotional and historically loaded point in BMW M history.
The central design point of the M4 CSL is factory-installed weight saving. Compared to the M4 Competition Coupé with factory-installed M Steptronic, the M4 CSL lost approximately 100 kilograms. The weight saving comes from factory-installed carbon factory roof panels (shared with M4 Competition Coupé), factory-installed carbon factory bonnet (unique to CSL, with factory-installed Power-dome), factory-installed carbon factory boot (unique to CSL), factory-installed carbon factory front splitter and factory-installed carbon factory rear diffuser (unique to CSL), factory-installed removal of the rear seat and rear seatbelts, factory-installed stripped door panels with factory-installed lighter structure, factory-installed lighter M Sport Magnesium exhaust system, factory-installed lighter M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 GTS heritage), and factory-installed lighter glass. Despite the weight saving, the M4 CSL remains a full regular BMW M with factory-installed standard air conditioning, factory-installed navigation, and factory-installed Harman/Kardon audio system.
The factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six engine is derived from the M4 Competition (510 hp) and factory-installed further developed for the CSL with factory-installed increased boost pressure, factory-installed newer ignition timing, and factory-installed CSL-specific software mapping. The result: factory-installed 550 hp and factory-installed 650 Nm of torque, coupled to factory-installed exclusively the M Steptronic eight-speed automatic (no manual specification, no 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive). The factory-installed acceleration from 0-100 km/h is 3.7 seconds; the factory-installed top speed is limited to 307 km/h (unlocked via factory-installed M Driver's Package). The factory-installed exhaust has a factory-installed M Sport exhaust with factory-installed valve control.
At launch the M4 CSL held the factory-installed Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for production BMW M models at 7:20.2 (measured on the full 20.832 km track). For collectors this is a substantially important selling point: the M4 CSL is faster on the Nordschleife than any other BMW M ever built, including the earlier M4 GTS (7:28). The lap record strengthens the M4 CSL's market position as the most extreme regular BMW M specification of its generation.
Since the production stop in 2023 the M4 CSL has seen a strong initial valuation curve. Well-documented examples in factory specification (particularly factory-installed Frozen Brooklyn Grey with factory Alpine White contrast details) trade substantially above original new price. The scarce production number of 1,000 cars, the factory-installed CSL heritage, and the factory-installed Nürburgring time together produce a strong collector class position. For sellers this means a well-documented M4 CSL with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original factory specification, low mileage, and BMW Group Classic certification attracts substantial international interest.
The G82 M4 CSL was built in 2022-2023 with a production of exactly 1,000 cars worldwide. For collectors this is a substantially scarce production number within the modern BMW M line; by comparison, the E46 M3 CSL (2003-2004) had a production of around 1,383 cars. For the M4 CSL confirmation of factory chassis number via BMW Group Classic is essential.
The M4 CSL is available in three factory-installed colours: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic (the signature factory-installed CSL colour with factory Alpine White contrast details), Sapphire Black Metallic, and Alpine White. All three have factory-installed Alpine White (or similar) factory-installed contrast details on the nose ring, rear diffuser, and wheels. For collectors, factory-installed Frozen Brooklyn Grey is generally the most sought-after specification and higher priced.
The M4 CSL has factory-installed carbon factory roof panels, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet (with factory-installed Power-dome), factory-installed carbon factory boot, factory-installed carbon factory front splitter, factory-installed carbon factory rear diffuser, and factory-installed carbon factory interior panels. For collectors, factory carbon elements in factory original condition (no bubbles, no cracks) are strongly value-driving.
The M4 CSL has factory-installed M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 GTS heritage) with factory-installed carbon factory shell, factory-installed Merino leather with factory-installed red-black factory contrast stitching, and factory-installed Alcantara elements. For collectors, factory original bucket seats in factory specification with factory Alcantara in good condition are essential.
Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential. Document factory turbo condition of biturbo S58, factory-installed M Steptronic mechatronics service, factory-installed brakes condition (factory-installed M Carbon-ceramic brakes were factory-installed standard), factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre status, and factory diagnostic report.
The M4 CSL held the factory-installed Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for production cars within BMW at launch (7:20.2). For collectors, moderate trackday participation is acceptable provided factory-installed brakes, factory-installed tyres, and factory turbo condition are documented. For circuit use intensively used examples are substantially lower priced; proven road use with low mileage is strongly value-driving for collectors.
For M4 CSL collectors low mileage (under 10,000 for 2022 model year, under 5,000 for 2023 model year) is substantially value-driving. Number of previous owners, geographic distribution, and factory-installed BMW M Driving Experience certification strengthen the story.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
The M4 CSL chassis number and type plate. Specific production batch (of 1,000 cars worldwide), factory-installed model year (2022 or 2023), factory-installed market version (Europe, US, Asian markets), and factory-installed CSL-specific equipment details. Request BMW Group Classic certification in Munich.
For M4 CSL BMW Group Classic certification is substantially value-adding. Apply via BMW Group Classic in Munich via form. Confirms factory chassis number, factory engine number, factory-installed production date, original factory specification, factory-installed package elements, and factory-installed paint colour. When in doubt about rarity this is essential.
All invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist. For M4 CSL biturbo S58: factory turbo condition, factory-installed M Steptronic service, factory-installed M Carbon-ceramic brakes status, factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre status. For collectors, invoices with factory diagnostic reports are essential.
The M4 CSL has factory-installed carbon factory roof panels, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet with factory-installed Power-dome, factory-installed carbon factory boot, factory-installed carbon factory front splitter, factory-installed carbon factory rear diffuser, and factory-installed carbon factory interior panels. Document factory carbon condition (no bubbles, no cracks) with chronological photos. For collectors, factory original carbon elements are essential.
The M4 CSL has factory-installed M Carbon bucket seats with factory-installed carbon factory shell, factory-installed Merino leather with factory-installed red-black factory contrast stitching, and factory-installed Alcantara elements. Document factory Alcantara condition (no wear), factory Merino leather condition, and factory carbon shell condition. For collectors, factory original bucket seats in good condition are essential.
Paint colour with BMW factory code: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, or Alpine White. Factory-installed contrast details on the nose ring, rear diffuser, and wheels (factory-installed Alpine White for Frozen Brooklyn Grey and Sapphire Black, factory-installed grey for Alpine White). For collectors, factory-installed Frozen Brooklyn Grey is generally higher priced.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation (factory-installed BMW M Driving Experience participation is acceptable, factory-installed regular trackday participation with factory-installed documented factory-installed brakes, factory-installed tyres, and factory turbo condition). For collectors: low mileage (under 10,000 for 2022, under 5,000 for 2023) is substantially value-driving.
