The M4 model line came about through a renaming, not a new car. In 2014 BMW M decided that the M3 name would be reserved exclusively for the Sedan; the Coupé and Convertible variants would henceforth be called M4. Mechanically the F82 M4 (2014-2020, biturbo S55, 431-460 hp) and G82 M4 (2021-present, biturbo S58, 480-503 hp) are therefore direct siblings of the M3, sharing drivetrain and chassis. Beyond that BMW M built limited specifications that appeared only in M4 form: F82 M4 GTS (2016, around 700 cars worldwide, with factory water injection system and 493 hp), F82 M4 CS (2017-2018, 460 hp), and the G82 M4 CSL (2022-2023, 1,000 cars, 543 hp). Factory Edition specifications such as the M4 Competition x Kith (2022) also belong to this lineage. For anyone tracking BMW M culture, the M4 offers the most diverse selection of limited editions, more than the regular M3 in the same period.
The BMW M4 was unveiled in 2014 as a new model line within BMW M. Until 2014 Coupé and Convertible specifications of the M3 were part of the M3 lineage; from 2014 BMW M renamed these specifications to M4 as a separate model line. The F82 M4 Coupé and F83 M4 Convertible share the biturbo 3.0-litre S55 inline-six with the F80 M3 Sedan, with the same 431 hp at launch. The F82 Coupé has carbon roof panels for weight saving and substantially reinforced body elements over the standard 4 Series. The F83 Convertible uses a four-piece folding hardtop that folds away electrically. Production ran to 2020 with substantial worldwide sales.
In 2016 BMW M unveiled the F82 M4 GTS, one of the most extreme regular M specifications ever built. Production was limited to around 700 cars worldwide. The package includes 493 hp biturbo S55 (a substantial 62 hp increase over Competition Package), water injection system (a unique innovation where water is injected into the intake for cooling, enabling higher boost pressure and lower ignition temperature), adjustable rear wing, factory lowered chassis with coilover suspension, Acid Orange Metallic or Frozen Dark Grey Metallic paint colour, optional roll cage (market-dependent), and stripped interior. For collectors the M4 GTS is the most sought-after F82 M4 specification and trades consistently in its own high price tier.
In 2017 BMW M unveiled the F82 M4 CS, a limited CS specification between Competition Package and GTS. The M4 CS received 460 hp biturbo S55, carbon bonnet, carbon rear diffuser, Adaptive M suspension with sharpened settings, and lighter wheels. Paint colours: San Marino Blue Metallic, Lime Rock Grey Metallic, and Sakhir Orange Metallic. Additionally BMW M released Edition specifications: M4 DTM Champion Edition (2017, 200 cars in honour of Marco Wittmann's DTM title), M4 Competition Edition (2018, limited), and Frozen Editions in various matte specifications.
In 2021 BMW M unveiled the G82 M4 Coupé and G83 M4 Convertible as a new generation. The visual design (large kidney grilles) was controversial at launch but the engineering brought substantial improvements: a new biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six (shared with the G80 M3 and BMW X3 M / X4 M) producing 480 hp in regular and 510 hp in Competition specification. From 2022 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive became available as an option (Competition specifications only), making the G82 M4 the first M4 with all-wheel drive. The G83 Convertible uses a soft-top roof system instead of the folding hardtop of the F83.
The BMW M4 has seen a stable to rising valuation curve. F82 M4 Coupés in original specification with proven service history sit consistently in a strong segment; manual specifications are generally higher priced. M4 GTS is in its own high price tier and trades for well-documented examples in original specification substantially above Competition Package prices. M4 CS follows this trend. G82 M4 (2021-present) is the most modern M4 and trades for well-specified Competition specifications with 4MATIC+ in a strong market position. For sellers this means a well-documented M4 with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original original specification, and (for M4 GTS, M4 CS) confirmed original specification attracts strong international interest.
F82 M4 Coupé (2014-2020, 431-460 hp biturbo S55), F83 M4 Convertible (2014-2020), G82 M4 Coupé (2021-present, 480-503 hp biturbo S58, with or without 4MATIC+ drivetrain), or G83 M4 Convertible (2021-present). For limited specifications: M4 GTS (2016, 493 hp and water injection), M4 CS (2017-2018, 460 hp), or M4 Competition x Kith (2022).
For collectors the Coupé is generally more attractive and higher priced than the Convertible, particularly on limited specifications (M4 GTS, M4 CS, and M4 CSL were available only as Coupé). The F83/G83 Convertible has a folding roof system; with the G83 this is a soft-top instead of the four-piece folding hardtop of the F83. For modern summer drivers the Convertible is attractive.
F82/F83 M4 (2014-2020) was delivered with manual six-speed gearbox or M-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. G82/G83 M4 (2021-present) is delivered with manual six-speed gearbox (only for Competition specifications without 4MATIC+) or M Steptronic eight-speed automatic. For collectors and enthusiast drivers, the manual version is substantially more valuable, particularly on the F82 M4.
The F82 M4 GTS (2016, around 700 cars worldwide) has 493 hp biturbo S55 with water injection system (a unique innovation where water is injected into the intake for cooling), adjustable rear wing, Acid Orange or Frozen Dark Grey paint colour, roll cage (optional in most markets), and stripped interior. For collectors, confirmation via BMW Group Classic is essential.
For M4 collectors, iconic colours such as Yas Marina Blue Metallic, Austin Yellow Metallic, Sakhir Orange Metallic, Frozen specifications, and factory designo options strongly drive price. For M4 GTS: Frozen Dark Grey Metallic or Acid Orange Metallic. For M4 CS: San Marino Blue, Lime Rock Grey, or Sakhir Orange. For G82 M4: Frozen Brooklyn Grey, Frozen Sapphire Black, or Sao Paulo Yellow.
M4 service is specialist work: for F82/F83 M4 biturbo S55 (turbo condition, head gaskets, walnut blasting, charge pipes), for G82/G83 M4 biturbo S58 (turbo condition, M Steptronic mechatronics). Service at BMW M Classic or a recognised M specialist is essential.
For M4 collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 60,000 for F82, under 30,000 for G82) with full service history is more attractive. For M4 GTS, M4 CS, and Edition specifications low mileage is substantially value-driving; for regular F82/G82 M4 specifications an average use with proven service is acceptable.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
F82 M4 Coupé (2014-2020), F83 M4 Convertible (2014-2020), G82 M4 Coupé (2021-present), or G83 M4 Convertible (2021-present). Specific specification: regular M4, Competition Package, M4 CS (F82, 2017-2018), M4 GTS (F82, 2016), or Edition specification. Model year, chassis number, and engine number.
Strongly recommended for F82 M4 GTS (2016, around 700 cars, water injection, Acid Orange or Frozen Dark Grey) and F82 M4 CS (2017-2018). Apply via BMW Group Classic in Munich. Confirms original specification and packages. For regular M4 specifications optional.
All invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist. For F82/F83 biturbo S55: turbo condition, head gaskets, walnut blasting, charge pipes. For G82/G83 biturbo S58: turbo condition, transmission service, diagnostics on 4MATIC+ (where applicable).
F82 M4 GTS has water injection system (a unique innovation). Document diagnostic report that the water injection system is fully functional, water tank status, injectors, and software update status. For collectors, proof of working water injection is essential.
The biturbo S55 with direct injection has known points of attention with carbon build-up on valves and charge pipes. Document walnut blasting (every 60,000-80,000 km) and diagnostics on charge pipes with invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist. For collectors, proof of original charge pipes is essential.
Paint colour with BMW factory code, designo confirmation if applicable, Edition packages (DTM Champion Edition 2017, Competition Edition, Frozen Editions). For M4 GTS: Acid Orange Metallic or Frozen Dark Grey Metallic. For M4 CS: San Marino Blue, Lime Rock Grey, or Sakhir Orange. For G82 M4: Frozen Brooklyn Grey, Frozen Sapphire Black, or Sao Paulo Yellow.
Number of previous owners, mileage, gearbox specification (F82: manual or M-DCT, G82: manual or M Steptronic), any trackday participation, geographic distribution. For collector-oriented sales the manual specification is generally higher priced. For M4 GTS, M4 CS, and Edition specifications: low mileage is substantially value-driving.
