The BMW M2 is the compact rear-wheel-drive BMW M model line, positioned as the spiritual successor to the E30 M3 and the one-off E82 1M Coupé. The line spans the F87 M2 (2016-2018, biturbo 3.0-litre N55, factory-installed 370 hp), F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021, biturbo 3.0-litre S55, factory-installed 410 hp, shared with F80 M3), and G87 M2 (2023-present, biturbo 3.0-litre S58, factory-installed 460 hp). Additionally factory-installed limited specifications exist: F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, factory-installed 450 hp and factory-installed stripped interior, around 2,200 cars worldwide). For collectors the M2 line represents factory-installed pure rear-wheel-drive BMW M culture in compact form with factory-installed manual specification still available. A BMW M2 is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the factory-installed compact BMW M culture.
BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 in October 2015 as the regular production successor to the one-off E82 1M Coupé (2011-2012). The F87 M2 is based on the E82 1 Series Coupé but with factory-installed M-specific adaptations: factory-installed widened bodywork (factory-installed broad wheel arches), factory-installed M bumpers front and rear, factory-installed wheels with factory-installed M design, and factory-installed Adaptive M suspension. The engine is the factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre N55 inline-six with factory-installed 370 hp and factory-installed 465 Nm of torque. Available with factory-installed manual six-speed gearbox or factory-installed M-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. For BMW M purists the F87 M2 is the spiritual successor to the E30 M3 and E36 M3 in compact form.
In 2018 BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 Competition as a replacement for the regular F87 M2. The most important change is the factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre S55 inline-six engine (shared with F80 M3 Competition Package and F82 M4 Competition Package) with factory-installed 410 hp and factory-installed 550 Nm of torque. The S55 is technically more closely related to the M3/M4 than the N55 (which comes from the 335i). Additionally factory-installed larger intercooler, factory-installed lighter carbon-fibre strut tower brace, factory-installed sportier exhaust with factory-installed valve control, and factory-installed new front with factory-installed kidney grilles. For collectors the M2 Competition is substantially higher priced than the F87 M2 (2016-2018) and generally the most sought-after regular F87.
In 2019 BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 CS as a limited top specification above the M2 Competition. Production was limited to around 2,200 cars worldwide. The package includes factory-installed 450 hp biturbo S55 (a factory-installed power increase of 40 hp over Competition), factory-installed Adaptive M suspension with factory-installed CS-specific settings, factory-installed M Carbon-ceramic brakes optional, factory-installed stripped interior with factory-installed M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 CS), factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed carbon factory roof panel, and factory-installed carbon factory interior panels. Factory-installed paint colours: Hockenheim Silver Metallic, Misano Blue Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, and Alpine White. The F87 M2 CS is available only with factory-installed M-DCT (no manual specification). For collectors the M2 CS represents the most extreme regular F87 M2 specification.
In 2023 BMW M unveiled the G87 M2 as a new generation, based on the G42 2 Series Coupé. The package includes factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six (shared with G80 M3 and G82 M4) with factory-installed 460 hp and factory-installed 550 Nm. Available with factory-installed manual six-speed gearbox or factory-installed M Steptronic eight-speed automatic. The G87 M2 is factory-installed exclusively rear-wheel drive (no factory-installed 4MATIC+ available, unlike G80 M3 / G82 M4). For BMW M purists this is substantially relevant: the G87 M2 is the only modern BMW M that is factory-installed exclusively rear-wheel drive in the G generation.
The M2 line has seen a stable to rising valuation curve. F87 M2 (2016-2018) in factory specification with proven service history sits consistently in a strong segment; manual specifications are generally higher priced. F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) is substantially higher valued than regular F87. F87 M2 CS (2020-2021) is in its own high price tier because of factory-installed scarce production and factory-installed CS equipment. G87 M2 (2023-present) is the most modern M2 and is strongly valued for well-specified manual specifications in factory-installed Toronto Red or Zandvoort Blue. For sellers this means a well-documented M2 with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original factory specification, and (for M2 CS) confirmed factory specification attracts strong international interest.
F87 M2 (2016-2018, biturbo N55, factory-installed 370 hp), F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021, biturbo S55, factory-installed 410 hp, shared with F80 M3), or G87 M2 (2023-present, biturbo S58, factory-installed 460 hp). For limited specifications: F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, factory-installed 450 hp, around 2,200 cars). For collectors confirmation of factory chassis number and factory-installed production year is essential.
F87 M2 (2016-2018) available with manual six-speed gearbox or M-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) likewise. F87 M2 CS (2020-2021) factory-installed exclusively with M-DCT. G87 M2 (2023-present) available with manual six-speed gearbox or M Steptronic eight-speed automatic. For collectors and enthusiast drivers, the manual version is substantially more valuable, particularly on the modern G87 where manual BMW M specifications are becoming scarce.
The F87 M2 (2016-2018) has factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre N55 inline-six (factory-installed 370 hp), while the F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) has factory-installed biturbo 3.0-litre S55 (factory-installed 410 hp, shared with F80 M3 Competition Package). The S55 is technically closer related to the M3/M4 than the N55 and has factory-installed larger intercooler, factory-installed lighter carbon-fibre strut tower brace, and factory-installed sportier exhaust. For collectors the M2 Competition with S55 is generally higher priced.
The F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, around 2,200 cars worldwide) has factory-installed 450 hp biturbo S55, factory-installed Adaptive M suspension with factory-installed CS settings, factory-installed M Carbon-ceramic brakes optional, factory-installed stripped interior with factory-installed M Carbon bucket seats, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, and factory-installed carbon factory roof panel. Factory-installed paint colours: Hockenheim Silver Metallic, Misano Blue Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, or Alpine White.
For F87 M2: factory-installed Long Beach Blue Metallic (the iconic M2 signature colour), Mineral Grey, Alpine White, Black Sapphire. For F87 M2 Competition: factory-installed Hockenheim Silver, Sunset Orange, Long Beach Blue. For F87 M2 CS: factory-installed Hockenheim Silver, Misano Blue, Sapphire Black, Alpine White. For G87 M2: factory-installed Toronto Red, Zandvoort Blue, Brooklyn Grey, Alpine White. For collectors factory-installed Long Beach Blue on F87 is generally high-priced.
M2 service is specialist work: for F87 M2 N55 (factory turbo condition, factory-installed waste-gate rattle check, factory-installed walnut blasting), for F87 M2 Competition/CS S55 (factory turbo condition, factory-installed head gaskets, factory-installed walnut blasting, factory-installed charge pipes), for G87 M2 S58 (factory turbo condition, factory-installed M Steptronic service). Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential.
For M2 collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 60,000 for F87 2016, under 40,000 for F87 Competition, under 20,000 for F87 CS, under 10,000 for G87) with full service history is more attractive. For M2 CS low mileage is substantially value-driving; for regular F87/G87 M2 an average use with proven service is acceptable.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.

Document factory diagnostic report from a BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist.
The F87 M2 N55, S55 have known factory-installed points of attention with factory-installed carbon build-up on valves (factory walnut blasting needed every 60,000-80,000 km) and factory-installed charge pipes. Document factory walnut blasting history and factory diagnostics on charge pipes with invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist.

For collector-oriented sales the manual specification is generally higher priced. For M2 CS: low mileage is substantially value-driving.
