The Lamborghini Gallardo is the model that commercially transformed Lamborghini. Introduced in 2003 as the smaller sibling to the Murciélago, the Gallardo was the first Lamborghini fully developed under Audi ownership for the broader supercar segment. By the end of production in 2013, more than fourteen thousand Gallardos had been built, making it the best-selling Lamborghini in history until that point. The naturally aspirated V10 (5.0 litres to 2008, then 5.2 litres), the choice between permanent four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive on later specifications, and the choice between manual open-gate gearbox and e-gear give the Gallardo line a broad collector range. A Gallardo is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the naturally aspirated V10 culture and values the difference between an early 5.0-litre and an LP570-4 Superleggera.
The Lamborghini Gallardo was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2003. It was the first Lamborghini developed for the broader supercar segment and positioned below the Murciélago. Luc Donckerwolke's design translated the geometric Lamborghini language into a more compact form; unlike the Murciélago, the Gallardo received conventional doors rather than scissor doors. The engine was a newly developed naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 producing 500 hp, supplied with permanent four-wheel drive and either a manual six-speed open-gate gearbox or the optional e-gear. Production ran to 2008 and was substantially successful: the Gallardo brought Lamborghini to commercial maturity and built a new buyer pool.
In 2008 Lamborghini unveiled the Gallardo LP560-4 as a thorough update. The engine grew to 5.2 litres with direct injection (Iniezione Diretta Stratificata) and produced 560 hp. The LP designation (Longitudinale Posteriore) replaced the original model designation. Visually the LP560-4 received redrawn front and rear bumpers, new LED headlamps, and a modernised interior. The LP560-4 Spyder followed in 2009. For collectors the LP560-4 in manual specification with factory Ad Personam colour is the most sought-after regular Gallardo; the LP560-4 Bicolore (2010, 250 cars in two-tone specification) is a specific limited variant.
In 2009 Lamborghini unveiled two specifications that defined the purest Gallardo form for enthusiasts. The LP550-2 Valentino Balboni (250 built, named after Lamborghini's legendary test driver) brought rear-wheel drive back to the Gallardo for the first time: 550 hp, RWD, and offered only in a specific factory livery with a white stripe along the entire length. The LP570-4 Superleggera (2010-2012) was the hardcore four-wheel-drive specification: 570 hp, weight saving of 70 kg through more extensive carbon packs, factory-installed sports seats, and substantially sharpened chassis. For collectors both specifications are consistently higher priced than regular LP560-4 specifications.
The Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante (2010-2013) brought Superleggera engineering to the Spyder specification: 570 hp in an open configuration with factory-installed carbon hard- and soft-top options. The LP570-4 Squadra Corse (2013, 50 built) was the closing factory specification, inspired by the Super Trofeo race Gallardos: factory-installed carbon rear wing, lightweight interior elements, and a specific factory livery. The Squadra Corse marked the end of Gallardo production in 2013, after more than fourteen thousand cars built over ten years. For collectors these closing specifications are the most valuable Gallardos.
The Gallardo has seen a steadily rising valuation curve since 2018. Regular Gallardos and LP560-4 specifications in original condition with proven service history are an accessible entry into Lamborghini ownership. Manual specifications (particularly LP550-2 and LP560-4) and factory Ad Personam specifications sit substantially higher. The Valentino Balboni (250 built), LP570-4 Superleggera, Spyder Performante, and LP570-4 Squadra Corse (50 built) are generally the most expensive Gallardos. For sellers this means a well-documented Gallardo with proven Lamborghini service history, original colour, and confirmed factory specification attracts strong international interest. The buyer you want is a Lamborghini enthusiast who values the naturally aspirated V10 culture and knows the specific Gallardo specification.
Early Gallardo (2003-2008, 5.0-litre V10, 500 hp), Gallardo Spyder (2006-2008), Gallardo Superleggera (2007-2008, 530 hp), LP560-4 (2008-2012, 5.2-litre V10, 560 hp), LP560-4 Spyder, LP550-2 Valentino Balboni (2009, limited to 250 cars RWD), LP570-4 Superleggera (2010-2012), LP570-4 Spyder Performante (2010-2013), LP560-4 Bicolore (2010, 250 built), LP550-2 (RWD, 2010-2013), LP570-4 Squadra Corse (2013, 50 built), and factory specifications such as Edizione Tecnica.
The Gallardo was offered as coupé and Spyder, with the Spyder using an electric soft-top roof mechanism that folds away behind the cabin. For collectors the coupé generally sells faster, although the Spyder remains particularly attractive to specific buyer pools (summer drivers, Mediterranean use). For limited specifications such as the LP570-4 Spyder Performante the Spyder is generally scarcer than the coupé.
The Gallardo was offered with a manual six-speed open-gate gearbox (with chrome shift gate) or the optional e-gear (single-clutch automated manual with paddle shifters). For collectors and enthusiast drivers the manual version is substantially more valuable; the combination of V10 sound and tactile open-gate shift is a defining feature of Gallardo culture.
Most Gallardos have permanent four-wheel drive (the '-4' in the model designation). The LP550-2 Valentino Balboni (2009, 250 built) and the LP550-2 (2010-2013) have rear-wheel drive only. For enthusiasts of the purer driving experience the LP550-2 in manual specification is generally the most sought-after regular Gallardo; they are scarcer than four-wheel-drive specifications.
Classic factory colours such as Giallo Midas, Arancio Borealis, Verde Ithaca, Nero Noctis, Bianco Monocerus, and Grigio Telesto are among the most sought-after specifications. Ad Personam specifications appear on later LP560-4, LP570-4 Superleggera, and LP570-4 Spyder Performante and are strongly value-driving for collectors. Original leather, factory carbon packs, and original wheels reinforce value.
Gallardo service is specialist work: the V10 requires regular inspection of head gaskets, timing chains, and clutch status (particularly on e-gear). Service at a Lamborghini dealer, Polo Storico, or a recognised Lamborghini specialist is essential. Major service intervals are typically every three to four years; at higher mileage engine-out service becomes relevant.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
Early Gallardo, Spyder, Superleggera, LP560-4, LP560-4 Spyder, LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, LP570-4 Superleggera, LP570-4 Spyder Performante, LP560-4 Bicolore, LP550-2, or LP570-4 Squadra Corse. Model year, chassis number, and engine number. Gearbox: manual (open gate) or e-gear. Drivetrain: four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.
Strongly recommended for LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, LP570-4 Squadra Corse, LP560-4 Bicolore, and Ad Personam specifications. Apply via a Lamborghini dealer or Polo Storico in Sant'Agata Bolognese based on the chassis number. For regular Gallardos and LP560-4 specifications optional but reinforces factory-spec confirmation.
All invoices from a Lamborghini dealer, Polo Storico, or recognised Lamborghini specialist. The naturally aspirated V10 requires specialist knowledge: head gaskets, timing chains, clutch status (particularly on e-gear), cooling system. Major service every three to four years; document all completed work. General-garage invoices carry considerably less weight.
The e-gear uses a single-clutch automated manual that wears faster under rough use (particularly low-speed stop-and-go traffic) than a dual-clutch gearbox. Renewal is expensive (indicative ten to fifteen thousand euros). Document clutch wear report from Lamborghini, any clutch renewal, and keep invoices. For manual specifications clutch wear is less critical.
Paint colour with factory code (Giallo Midas, Arancio Borealis, Verde Ithaca, Nero Noctis, Bianco Monocerus, Grigio Telesto, or Ad Personam colour), leather specification with factory embroidery, factory carbon packs exterior and interior, original wheels (Callisto, Cordelia, or factory-installed specification), any factory-installed aerodynamics on LP570-4 Superleggera and Squadra Corse.
Photos of factory build plate with production number for LP550-2 Valentino Balboni (1-250), LP560-4 Bicolore (1-250), LP570-4 Squadra Corse (1-50), and other limited factory specifications. For collector-oriented sales early chassis numbers and complete factory documentation are crucial.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation, geographic distribution. For collector-oriented sales of limited specifications low mileage in original condition is generally strongly value-driving; for regular Gallardos and LP560-4 specifications average use with full service history is acceptable.
