For seventy-three years Ferrari refused to build an SUV. Then, in September 2022, Maranello unveiled the Purosangue, Italian for "thoroughbred", a reference to equine genetics. It is Ferrari's first four-door production car in the marque's history, arriving two decades after the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX. Ferrari explicitly limits production to a maximum of 20% of total annual volume to protect SUV exclusivity; the waiting list runs to 2027-2028. Under the bonnet: a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 (the F140 IA, shared with the 812 Superfast) producing 725 hp, striking for an SUV when Porsche, Lamborghini and Aston Martin offer turbo or hybrid drivetrains as standard in this segment. Two innovations are Ferrari firsts: 4RM Evo all-wheel drive with a separate two-speed front gearbox (no mechanical link between front and rear above 200 km/h), and FAST active dampers with an individual electric motor per wheel.
Ferrari unveiled the Purosangue in September 2022 and started production in 2023. It is a substantially historic turning point for Ferrari: until the Purosangue Ferrari had never built a four-door SUV or four-door regular production specification. For collectors the F140 IA V12 in the Purosangue represents the last regular production Ferrari with naturally aspirated V12 engine (all newer models use turbocharged or PHEV architecture). The Purosangue has Ferrari's unique 4RM Evo all-wheel drive system. The system consists of eight-speed F1 DCT gearbox on the rear axle (standard Ferrari specification) and two-speed gearbox on the front (unique Ferrari specification, first used in FF and GTC4 Lusso, further developed for Purosangue). The 4RM Evo specification makes all-wheel drive functional only below 200 km/h; above 200 km/h the Purosangue is exclusively rear-wheel driven. The Purosangue introduced Ferrari's first active suspension system: Ferrari Active Suspension Technology (FAST). The system has individually controlled dampers per wheel (Multimatic active dampers with electric motor per wheel) that can individually extend, shorten, and damp. The system enables SUV ride height on motorway (standard 185 mm ground clearance) and lowered ride height in sport mode (-10 mm). For collectors FAST represents a substantial technical innovation within Ferrari's regular production line.
Since production start in 2023 the Purosangue has seen a substantially strong initial appreciation curve.
