The F40 was the last Ferrari personally approved for production by Enzo Ferrari. The model was unveiled in Maranello in July 1987, built to mark Ferrari's fortieth anniversary, and remained in production until 1992. A total of 1,311 cars left the factory, followed by 19 race conversions (LM, Competizione and GTE) by Michelotto. The biturbo 2.9-litre F120A V8 produces 478 hp and made the F40 the first production car to exceed 200 mph (claimed top speed 324 km/h). Within the so-called Ferrari Big Five, the F40 appears relatively most often on the international market. That makes the differences between individual examples important: specification, originality, service history, provenance and Ferrari Classiche certification can strongly influence international interest and the eventual sale price.
The F40 is the second car in what Ferrari collectors call the Big Five: 288 GTO (1984-1987, 272 cars), F40 (1987-1992, 1,311 cars), F50 (1995-1997, 349 cars), Enzo (2002-2005, 400 cars) and LaFerrari (Coupé 2013-2015, 499 cars; Aperta 2016-2018, 210 cars). At 1,311 examples the F40 is the most frequently offered of the five. Technically it is the direct successor to the 288 GTO: the same biturbo V8 architecture, taken further in a harder configuration without ABS, power steering or airbags.
The 1,311-car production run contains several technical variations that matter for the F40 market. The first roughly 50 cars had plexiglass sliding windows rather than electric ones. From 1989 Ferrari produced a catalysed version for emission-regulated markets (primarily the United States and Switzerland), with revised exhaust configuration. Mid-production, Ferrari replaced the rubber suspension bushings with solid units, and later cars received adjustable suspension. The car was delivered exclusively in Rosso Corsa; any non-red example has been resprayed after the fact.
The F120A V8 is a specialist engine outside the Ferrari network. Periodic turbo rebuilds, head gaskets and service of the KKK turbochargers require specialist knowledge held by a small number of recognised specialists. For the F40, Ferrari Classiche certification is an important value factor: it verifies chassis number, engine number, body originality and the absence of structural modifications. An F40 without a Classiche report can still be attractive, but requires a particularly complete dossier with traceable service history from Ferrari or a recognised specialist.
The engine number (F120A) and the chassis number should be linked exactly as delivered from the factory. A replacement engine, significantly repaired body or insufficiently documented modification can affect value. Ferrari Classiche formally verifies this pairing in its certification.
For the F40, Classiche is effectively the market standard. The certification confirms originality of engine, chassis, body and interior. Application runs through Maranello and takes several months. An F40 without a valid report sits structurally lower in pricing.
The F120A V8 requires specialist service: turbo rebuilds, KKK components, head gaskets and cooling demand knowledge held by a small number of recognised specialists. A complete invoice history from Ferrari or a recognised F40 specialist is a verification point for potential buyers.
Within the 1,311 cars not all F40s are identical. Early cars with plexiglass sliding windows (roughly the first 50), non-catalysed versions and specific production years are distinguishing for F40 buyers. The exact specification and production variant can influence international demand.
All F40s left the factory in Rosso Corsa with body panels of kevlar, carbon and aluminium. As a result, the condition of panels and paintwork is closely assessed. Resprays, repaired damage or replaced panels do not preclude a sale, but must be clearly documented. An independent inspection of paint layer and panels can be valuable in this respect.
Full ownership chronology, with the original delivery invoice, continuous history and any notable prior owners, is a value element for F40 collectors. Known history via Ferrari official channels and international auction documentation strengthens the car's market position.
F40s with documented road use and a traceable use pattern are valued differently from cars with unexplained mileage or intensive trackday use. Unexplained low mileage is a point of attention for buyers, not automatically a positive.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
Send us a short description with chassis number, engine number and mileage. We assess free of charge whether an auction is appropriate at this time and which approach can deliver the best outcome for your situation.
Registration document, original invoice, build sheet, owner's pack, COC and complete service books. For the F40 specifically: documentation of any rebuilds, prior valuations and known publication or auction history.
Check whether the car has a valid Ferrari Classiche report. An application runs directly through Maranello with a lead time of several months; it is worth assessing in advance whether an application fits within the sales timeline. A current report contributes to confidence from international buyers.
Ask your Ferrari specialist for a full service overview. For the F40 specifically: the status of turbo rebuilds, head gaskets, cooling and KKK components. Invoices from a recognised F40 specialist are verifiable for buyers.
We coordinate professional imagery for the campaign. You reserve time for a shoot at a location of your choice; the car stays with you and does not need to be transported.
Based on the specific characteristics of your F40 and international reference sales (RM Sotheby's, Sotheby's, Bonhams) we propose a reserve price. It remains confidential and is only fixed once you have agreed.
When the reserve is met, the sale is binding to the highest bidder. Octane connects buyer and seller to complete the transaction. Payment can run directly or, on request, via a third-party account. For international buyers we can refer you to partners for export and registration administration.
Submit your car and our team will review it within 48 hours
