Three of the eight cylinders went away. In 2022 Ferrari replaced the F8 Tributo with a V6, the first in a regular production Berlinetta since Dino 246 production ended in 1974. The F163 engine has an unusual 120-degree V angle (instead of the more common 60 or 90 degrees) which lowers the centre of gravity and lets the turbos sit between the cylinder banks in the "hot-V" configuration. The ICE engine produces 663 hp; combined with a 167 hp electric motor on the rear axle the total reaches 830 hp. Plug-in charging via a Type 2 socket enables 25 km of electric running in eDrive mode. The 296 GTB is therefore the first regular production Berlinetta with a PHEV drivetrain and, equally significant, the first Ferrari to follow the "downsize with turbos" route that European CO2 regulations have been forcing on manufacturers in this price segment.
Ferrari unveiled the 296 GTB in June 2021 as a successor to the F8 Tributo and as the first regular production Berlinetta with V6 engine. This was a substantially historic turning point: until the 296 GTB Ferrari had used V6 engines only in limited models (Dino 246, Dino 308 GT4) or in race cars (F1 programmes). The 296 GTB has Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) system that combines the F163 V6 (663 hp) with electric motor (167 hp) on the rear axle for combined power of 830 hp. The PHEV battery (7.45 kWh, lithium-ion) enables eDrive mode: electric zero-emission driving with around 25 km range and maximum speed of 135 km/h. For collectors and modern Ferrari driving the PHEV architecture represents the transition to electrification within Ferrari's regular production line.
The Assetto Fiorano (Fiorano specification, after Ferrari's test track in Maranello) is the sportier specification of the 296 GTB. The package includes Multimatic shock absorbers (refined dampers with manual adjustment), lighter chassis (around 12 kg weight saving), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres (track-oriented tyres), carbon bonnet elements (carbon roof panels, carbon interior panels), and livery with Italian tricolor along the sides (unique option for Assetto Fiorano). For collectors Assetto Fiorano specification is substantially value-adding.
Since production start in 2022 the 296 GTB has seen a substantially stable initial appreciation curve. Regular 296 GTB specifications are price-stable at the level of Ferrari Maranello price list; Assetto Fiorano specifications are substantially higher priced. Tailor Made specifications are in the highest price tier. For sellers this means a well-documented 296 GTB with proven service history at Ferrari Maranello or recognised specialist, original original specification, Assetto Fiorano (where applicable), Power Warranty transfer, and Tailor Made confirmation (where applicable) attracts strong international interest.
