Three of the eight cylinders went away. In 2022 Ferrari replaced the F8 Tributo with a V6, the first in a regular production Berlinetta since Dino 246 production ended in 1974. The F163 engine has an unusual 120-degree V angle (instead of the more common 60 or 90 degrees) which lowers the centre of gravity and lets the turbos sit between the cylinder banks in the "hot-V" configuration. The ICE engine produces 663 hp; combined with a 167 hp electric motor on the rear axle the total reaches 830 hp. Plug-in charging via a Type 2 socket enables 25 km of electric running in eDrive mode. The 296 GTB is therefore the first regular production Berlinetta with a PHEV drivetrain and, equally significant, the first Ferrari to follow the "downsize with turbos" route that European CO2 regulations have been forcing on manufacturers in this price segment.
Ferrari unveiled the 296 GTB in June 2021 as a successor to the F8 Tributo and as the first regular production Berlinetta with V6 engine. This was a substantially historic turning point: until the 296 GTB Ferrari had used V6 engines only in limited models (Dino 246, Dino 308 GT4) or in race cars (F1 programmes). The regular production line was historically dominated by V8 (from 308 GTB in 1975) and V12. For collectors the 296 GTB represents the new Ferrari V6 culture. The number 296 refers to 2.99 litre displacement (rounded to 3.0 litres) and six cylinders.
The central technical point of the 296 GTB is the F163 biturbo V6 (3.0 litres, 663 hp in regular specification). The F163 has 120-degree V angle (instead of 60 or 90 degrees common for V6 engines) which enables lower centre of gravity and more compact dimensions. The turbos are placed within the V angle (hot-V configuration) for faster boost response. The F163 has redline of 8,500 rpm, increased power per litre of 221 hp/litre (highest power-per-litre in a regular production engine ever). For collectors F163 condition is substantially value-driving.
The 296 GTB has Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) system that combines the F163 V6 (663 hp) with electric motor (167 hp) on the rear axle for combined power of 830 hp. The PHEV battery (7.45 kWh, lithium-ion) enables eDrive mode: electric zero-emission driving with around 25 km range and maximum speed of 135 km/h. For collectors and modern Ferrari driving the PHEV architecture represents the transition to electrification within Ferrari's regular production line.
The Assetto Fiorano (Fiorano specification, after Ferrari's test track in Maranello) is the sportier specification of the 296 GTB. The package includes Multimatic shock absorbers (refined dampers with manual adjustment), lighter chassis (around 12 kg weight saving), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres (track-oriented tyres), carbon bonnet elements (carbon roof panels, carbon interior panels), and livery with Italian tricolor along the sides (unique option for Assetto Fiorano). For collectors Assetto Fiorano specification is substantially value-adding.
Since production start in 2022 the 296 GTB has seen a substantially stable initial appreciation curve. Regular 296 GTB specifications are price-stable at the level of Ferrari Maranello price list; Assetto Fiorano specifications are substantially higher priced. Tailor Made specifications are in the highest price tier. For sellers this means a well-documented 296 GTB with proven service history at Ferrari Maranello or recognised specialist, original original specification, Assetto Fiorano (where applicable), Power Warranty transfer, and Tailor Made confirmation (where applicable) attracts strong international interest.
Regular 296 GTB has combined 830 hp. Assetto Fiorano package (option) adds Multimatic shock absorbers, lighter chassis (around 12 kg weight saving), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, carbon bonnet elements, and livery with Italian tricolor. For collectors Assetto Fiorano specification is substantially value-adding.
The 296 GTB is available in regular colours (Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, Nero Daytona, Argento Nürburgring) and Tailor Made specifications (Rosso Imola, Verde Pino, Azzurro La Plata, Grigio Silverstone). For collectors Tailor Made specifications are substantially value-adding. For Assetto Fiorano package the livery (Italian tricolor) is a unique option.
The F163 V6 (biturbo 3.0-litre, 663 hp) is Ferrari's first regular production V6 and has 120-degree V angle (instead of 90 or 60 degrees common for V6 engines). For collectors, turbo condition, PHEV battery condition, electric motor condition, eDrive mode functionality, and diagnostic report are essential.
For 296 GTB Tailor Made examples document order history via Ferrari Maranello, Tailor Made elements (unique paint colour, unique interior specification, livery, unique wheels specific), Tailor Made certification, and documentation. For collectors Tailor Made confirmation is substantially value-adding.
The 296 GTB has 20-inch wheels with Ferrari design. Assetto Fiorano specification has lighter forged wheels. Brembo Carbon Ceramic Brakes are standard. For collectors original wheels (not replaced by aftermarket) and brake condition are essential.
Ferrari Maranello-recognised service is essential. For 296 GTB: PHEV battery service, turbo condition of F163 V6, electric motor diagnostics, F1 DCT mechatronics service, Carbon Ceramic Brake status, and Power Warranty status. For collectors Power Warranty transfer is generally value-adding.
For 296 GTB collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 15,000 for 2022-2023 model year, under 8,000 for 2024-present) with full service history is more attractive. For Assetto Fiorano specifications and Tailor Made specifications low mileage is substantially value-driving.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
296 GTB (2022-present) regular specification or Assetto Fiorano package. Model year, chassis number, engine number, and market version. For collectors Assetto Fiorano confirmation via factory order configuration is essential.
For modern Ferraris (such as 296 GTB) Ferrari Maranello-recognised documentation is substantially value-adding. Request Ferrari Classiche certification via Ferrari Maranello (Italy) or via local Ferrari dealer. Confirms original specification, packages, and Tailor Made specification (where applicable).
All invoices from Ferrari Maranello or recognised specialist. For 296 GTB: PHEV battery service, turbo condition of F163 V6, electric motor diagnostics, F1 DCT mechatronics service, Carbon Ceramic Brake status, Power Warranty status (invoice service).
The 296 GTB has PHEV system (F163 V6 + electric motor + 7.45 kWh battery). Document PHEV battery condition, electric motor status, eDrive mode functionality (around 25 km range), charging system status (plug-in charging), and diagnostic report from Ferrari-recognised specialist.
The F163 V6 (biturbo, 663 hp, redline 8,500 rpm) is Ferrari's first regular production V6. Document turbo condition, boost pressure status, 120-degree V angle configuration, and F163-specific service.
Paint colour with Ferrari factory code: regular colours (Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, Nero Daytona, Argento Nürburgring) or Tailor Made (Rosso Imola, Verde Pino, Azzurro La Plata, Grigio Silverstone). For Assetto Fiorano: document livery (Italian tricolor). Document Tailor Made elements with Ferrari certification.
Number of previous owners, mileage, market version, model year (2022-2023 or 2024-present), any Assetto Fiorano specification, Tailor Made specification, Power Warranty transfer, and geographic distribution. For collectors: low mileage (under 15,000 for 2022-2023, under 8,000 for 2024-present) is substantially value-driving.
