The Mercedes-AMG G63 is the performance specification of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class and one of the most recognisable luxury SUVs worldwide. Since its introduction in 2012 on the first-generation W463 chassis (an evolution of the original G-Wagen platform from 1979), the G63 has evolved into the modern benchmark for military-inspired luxury SUVs. The current W463A generation (2018-present) uses a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 (M177) producing 585 hp; the first W463 generation used a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 (M157) producing 544 hp. Variants include the original W463 G63 AMG, the W463 G63 AMG 6x6 (2013-2015, around 100 cars), the W463A G63 AMG, and the W463A G63 AMG 4x4² (2022-present). A G63 AMG is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the G-Class culture and values the difference between an original W463 and a W463A.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (originally G-Wagen, internally known as W460/W461) was unveiled in 1979 as a military and utility vehicle developed in collaboration with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. The original G-Wagen was intended for military and off-road use, with portal axles, three locking differentials, and a robust ladder-frame chassis. Over the years the G-Class evolved into luxury SUV positioning, with increasingly powerful engines and extensive luxury specification. The G63 AMG, introduced in 2012, represents the modern translation of this evolution: a military-derived robust chassis combined with AMG luxury and performance.
The first G63 AMG was introduced in 2012 on the W463 chassis (an evolution of the original G-Wagen W460/461). The engine was the 5.5-litre biturbo M157 V8 (shared with other AMG models of that period) producing 544 hp. The seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS gearbox was standard. Key factory-installed features include three locking differentials (front, rear, and centre), military-derived robust chassis architecture, and factory-installed AMG body elements (factory-installed side exhausts, factory-installed wheels, AMG Performance interior). Production of the W463 G63 ran to 2018 with substantial worldwide sales.
In 2013 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the G63 AMG 6x6, an exceptional factory-installed specification with an additional driven rear axle (six wheels, three driven axles), factory-installed portal axles, and substantially raised ride height. Production was limited to around 100 cars worldwide, with delivered vehicles mostly in the Middle East and United States. The 6x6 retains the same 5.5-litre biturbo V8 with 544 hp, but with adjusted drivetrain for the additional driven rear axle. For collectors the G63 6x6 is one of the rarest modern Mercedes-AMG specifications and trades consistently in seven-figure Euros.
In 2018 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W463A G63, a fundamental redevelopment of the G-Class. The chassis is completely new (although visually similar to the original W463 to preserve the iconic G-Class look), with modern bodywork, more luxurious interior, and modern infotainment. The engine was replaced by the 4.0-litre biturbo M177 V8 (the same as in the AMG GT and other modern AMG models) producing 585 hp. The drivetrain retains the three locking differentials but adds modern adjustable air suspension (AIRMATIC) and electronic stability systems. For collectors the W463A represents the modern G63 AMG with substantially improved on-road performance and luxury.
In 2022 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W463A G63 AMG 4x4², a factory-installed off-road specification with portal axles (the same technology as the W463 6x6), substantially raised ride height, and adjusted bodywork. The 4x4² is positioned for collectors who want the extreme off-road capability of the 6x6 in the modern W463A platform. The G63 AMG has strong value retention across all generations in 2025: the W463 first generation in factory specification is moving toward modern classic positioning, the W463A is the current benchmark of luxury SUV performance, and the 6x6 and 4x4² are in seven-figure collector territory. For sellers this means a well-documented G63 with proven Mercedes-AMG service history, original specification, and (for 6x6 and 4x4²) confirmed factory specification attracts strong international interest.
W463 G63 AMG (2012-2018, first generation with 5.5-litre biturbo M157), W463A G63 AMG (2018-present, second generation with 4.0-litre biturbo M177, fully redeveloped body and chassis), W463 G63 AMG 6x6 (2013-2015, around 100 cars worldwide), and W463A G63 4x4² (2022-present, limited production as hardcore off-road specification with portal axles).
For G63 collectors, factory designo colours and rare factory colours (designo Mystic Brown Magno, designo Magnetite Black Magno, factory-installed Manufaktur Magno specifications) strongly drive price. Factory-installed Edition specifications (Edition 1, Edition 463, factory designo Manufaktur colours) are particularly sought after by collectors.
G63 service is specialist work due to the complex combination of military-derived drivetrain (three locking differentials on all specifications, portal axles on 4x4²), AMG V8 biturbo, air suspension (on W463A), and modern electronics. Service at a Mercedes-Benz dealer with G-Class and AMG certification is essential; major service intervals depend on generation.
The G63 has factory-installed three locking differentials (front and rear axle plus centre differential), electronically controlled. For collectors and off-road enthusiasts, confirmation of working differential systems is essential. The W463A G63 4x4² has factory-installed portal axles (a military-derived technology that substantially raises ride height) and adjusted bodywork.
The W463 G63 AMG 6x6 (2013-2015, around 100 cars worldwide) has factory-installed additional driven rear axle, factory-installed portal axles, and adjusted bodywork. The W463A G63 4x4² (2022-present) has factory-installed portal axles and adjusted suspension. For collectors, confirmation of all factory-installed packages is essential for top valuation.
For G63 collectors moderate-to-low mileage (under 80,000) with full service history is more attractive than very high mileage. For 6x6 and 4x4², low mileage matters more. For regular G63 W463 and W463A, average use (particularly as road-oriented luxury SUV) is acceptable; off-road use requires documentation of post-use service.
Recommended for W463 6x6, W463A 4x4², and factory-installed Edition specifications. Apply via a Mercedes-Benz dealer or Classic Center in Fellbach based on the chassis number. Confirms factory specification, colour, factory-installed packages, and all factory designo or Manufaktur options. For regular G63 specifications optional.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
W463 G63 AMG (2012-2018), W463 G63 AMG 6x6 (2013-2015, around 100 cars), W463A G63 AMG (2018-present), or W463A G63 4x4² (2022-present). Model year, chassis number, and engine number. For 6x6 and 4x4²: confirmation of factory-installed portal axles and adjusted bodywork.
All invoices from a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG and G-Class certification. For W463 M157 biturbo: turbo condition, head gaskets, cooling system. For W463A M177 biturbo: turbo condition and factory diagnostics. For all specifications: three locking differentials, air suspension (W463A), and factory-installed off-road systems.
The G63 has factory-installed three locking differentials (front, rear, centre), electronically controlled. Document that all differentials are functional via factory diagnostics. For 6x6 and 4x4² with factory-installed portal axles: confirmation that all portal components and drivetrain elements are original and functional.
Paint colour with factory code, designo confirmation if applicable, factory-installed Manufaktur Magno specifications (the modern extension of designo), factory-installed Edition packages (Edition 1, Edition 463), factory-installed contrast details. For collectors factory Manufaktur and limited Edition specifications are substantially higher priced.
The W463A has factory-installed AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive dampers. A W463A G63 with proven working air suspension without leakage, no dashboard warning lights, and complete service invoices for air suspension components is a strong selling point for buyers.
For W463 6x6 (100 cars worldwide): confirmation of factory-installed additional driven rear axle, factory-installed portal axles, factory-installed adjusted bodywork, and factory build sheet with production number. For W463A 4x4²: confirmation of factory-installed portal axles and adjusted suspension. For collectors factory documentation is essential.
Number of previous owners, mileage, use pattern (luxury SUV road use, off-road use, business use), geographic distribution (G63 has strong markets in United States, Middle East, and Europe). For collector-oriented sales of 6x6 and 4x4² low mileage is value-driving; for regular G63 W463 and W463A an average use with full service history is acceptable.
