The Mercedes-AMG E63 is the performance specification of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and has been the benchmark for luxury performance sedans and estate specifications for more than two decades. Since its introduction in 2006 on the W211 generation, the E63 has evolved through four regular generations (W211, W212, W213, and the modern W214 with PHEV), with engines that represent the transition of AMG culture: naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 (M156 on W211 and early W212), biturbo 5.5-litre V8 (M157 on late W212), biturbo 4.0-litre V8 (M177 on W213), and ultimately PHEV 2.0-litre four-cylinder (on W214 from 2024). For collectors the E63 represents a broad spectrum: from the iconic naturally aspirated M156 (a direct connection to the SLS AMG and C63 W204) to the modern 4MATIC+ biturbo. An E63 is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the AMG executive performance culture and values the difference between a naturally aspirated W211 and a biturbo W213.
The Mercedes-AMG E63 was unveiled in 2006 as successor to the E55 AMG (W211 with M113K supercharged V8). The big change was technical: the transition from supercharged to the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8 (the same engine that would later be used in the SLS AMG, C63 AMG, and CLK63 AMG). The W211 E63 produced 514 hp and 630 Nm of torque, and was available as sedan and estate. For collectors the W211 marks the beginning of the modern E63 line with naturally aspirated AMG V8 culture. Production ran to 2009 with strong worldwide sales.
The W212 generation of the E63 covers two different engine specifications. From 2009 to 2013 the W212 E63 used the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8 producing 525 hp (and 558 hp on the Performance Package specification). In 2013 a major facelift occurred during which Mercedes-AMG transitioned to the 5.5-litre biturbo M157 V8 with 557 hp (E63 AMG) and 585 hp (E63 AMG S, a new limited specification). For collectors the pre-facelift W212 with M156 is an interesting modern classic segment; the post-facelift W212 with M157 biturbo is the most sought-after W212 specification for modern buyers. Both W212 specifications were available as sedan and estate.
In 2016 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W213 E63 with substantial technical updates: the 5.5-litre biturbo M157 was replaced by the 4.0-litre biturbo M177 V8 (shared with the AMG GT line), and the car received factory-installed 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive for the first time in the E63 line. The E63 AMG produced 571 hp and the E63 S AMG produced 612 hp, both paired with a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT gearbox. The 4MATIC+ system has variable torque distribution between front and rear axles, with the option for fully rear-wheel drive (Drift Mode) for track use. The W213 was available as sedan and estate, with factory-installed Edition 1 (2017) and E63 S Final Edition (2022) as limited specifications.
In 2024 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W214 E63 with a fundamental technical transition: the biturbo V8 was replaced by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder PHEV (comparable to the transition in the W206 C63). For some AMG purists this transition is controversial; for the market the W214 offers substantially more combined power and plug-in hybrid efficiency. For collectors the W214 positions itself as a new segment within the E63 line and not as a direct spiritual successor to the earlier V8 generations.
The E63 AMG has seen a varied valuation curve depending on generation. The W211 with naturally aspirated M156 V8 is increasingly seen as modern classic and is rising in value for well-documented examples with proven service history. The W212 (particularly pre-facelift naturally aspirated) follows this trend. The W213 E63 S, particularly in factory designo colour or Final Edition specification, retains strong market value. For the W213 E63 S Estate there is a specific buyer segment that values the combination of practical usability and AMG performance. For sellers this means a well-documented E63 with proven Mercedes-AMG service history, original specification, and factory documentation attracts strong international interest.
W211 E63 AMG (2006-2009, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8, 514 hp), W212 E63 AMG (2009-2013 with naturally aspirated M156, 2013-2016 with biturbo M157), W213 E63 AMG and E63 S AMG (2016-2023, 4.0-litre biturbo M177 V8, 571-612 hp, 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive), W214 (2024-present, 2.0-litre PHEV). Body: sedan or estate (T-Modell).
The naturally aspirated W211 and early W212 with the M156 V8 are for collectors the most sought-after E63 specifications due to the iconic naturally aspirated V8 culture. The late W212 and W213 biturbo retain the V8 culture with modern efficiency and substantially more torque. The W214 PHEV is a fundamental transition and is controversial among some AMG purists.
The E63 was delivered on all generations as sedan and as estate (T-Modell). The estate specifications are often more attractive to collectors due to scarcity and the unique combination of practical space with AMG performance. The W213 E63 S Estate in particular is a sought-after collector segment due to its substantial practical usability combined with 612 hp.
The W213 E63 introduced 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution between front and rear axles. The system can also engage fully rear-wheel drive (Drift Mode) for track use. For collectors, confirmation of factory-installed 4MATIC+ and all drivetrain components is essential.
E63 service is specialist work: for W211/early W212 with M156 V8, head bolts, valve clearance, and camshaft position sensor are points of attention. For late W212/W213 with biturbo: turbo condition, head gaskets, and cooling system. For W214 PHEV: hybrid battery status. Service at a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG certification is essential.
For E63 collectors, factory designo colours, factory-installed Edition packages, and rare factory colours (designo Diamond White Magno, designo Cardinal Red Magno, factory matte specifications) strongly drive price. For the W213, factory-installed Edition 1 and Final Edition (E63 S Final Edition) are particularly sought after.
For E63 collectors moderate-to-low mileage (under 80,000) with full service history is more attractive than very high mileage. For W211 with naturally aspirated M156 in modern classic positioning, low mileage matters more. Document any trackday participation, factory build sheet, and complete service history.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
W211 (2006-2009 with M156), W212 (2009-2013 pre-facelift M156, 2013-2016 post-facelift M157), W213 (2016-2023 with M177), or W214 (2024-present PHEV). Sedan or estate (T-Modell). For W213: confirmation whether E63 AMG (571 hp) or E63 S AMG (612 hp). Model year, chassis number, and engine number.
The M156 V8 has known points of attention: head bolts that can weaken (Mercedes-Benz has an improved bolt update), valve clearance adjustment every 50,000 km, and camshaft position sensor. Document whether the head bolt update has been performed, valve clearance history, and complete service at Mercedes-AMG.
All invoices from a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG certification or Mercedes-AMG Performance Center. For W211/W212 M156: valve clearance, head bolts. For W212/W213 biturbo: turbo condition, head gaskets, cooling system. For W214 PHEV: hybrid battery status and factory software updates.
The W213 E63 introduced 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with factory-installed Drift Mode (fully rear-wheel drive for track use). Document factory diagnostic report that the 4MATIC+ system and Drift Mode function are fully functional.
Paint colour with factory code, designo confirmation if applicable, factory-installed Edition packages (W213 Edition 1, E63 S Final Edition), factory carbon packs interior and exterior, AMG Performance Studio details, leather specification with factory embroidery. For collectors factory designo and limited Edition specifications are substantially higher priced.
Strongly recommended for W211 with M156 (modern classic positioning), W213 Edition 1, E63 S Final Edition, and E63 S Estate. Apply via a Mercedes-Benz dealer or Classic Center in Fellbach based on the chassis number. Confirms factory specification, colour, factory-installed packages, and all factory designo options.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation, geographic distribution. For regular E63 specifications average use with full service history is acceptable; for W211 with M156 and limited Edition specifications low mileage is value-driving. For estate specifications use pattern (family, business) is relevant.
