The Mercedes-AMG C63 is the performance specification of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and one of AMG's best-selling models ever. Since its introduction in 2007 on the W204 generation, the C63 has evolved through three regular V8 generations (W204 with the naturally aspirated M156, W205 with the biturbo M177) and made a fundamental transition in 2022 with the W206 to a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder PHEV (a controversial decision among AMG purists). For collectors the C63 represents a broad spectrum: from the iconic naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 on the W204 (and the 2011-2012 Black Series specification) to the modern hybrid positioning on the W206. A C63 is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the AMG V8 culture and values the difference between a naturally aspirated W204, a biturbo W205, and a PHEV W206.
The Mercedes-AMG C63 was unveiled in 2007 on the W204 C-Class generation as the successor to the C55 AMG. What immediately distinguished the W204 C63 was its engine: the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8 (derived from the engine that would later be used in the SLS AMG). With 451 hp on the original specification and 487 hp on the Performance Package specification, the W204 C63 was the most powerful C-Class ever at launch. The engine delivered an iconic naturally aspirated V8 sound and is for AMG collectors the culminating point of pure V8 culture before downsizing and turbocharging became standard. The C63 was delivered as sedan, estate, coupé, and cabriolet, with strong variation in availability per specification.
In 2011 AMG unveiled the W204 C63 Black Series, the most extreme regular C63 specification. Production was around 800 cars worldwide, exclusively as a coupé. The M156 V8 was uprated to 510 hp, the highest power of the C63 line to that point. The Black Series received factory-installed Aerodynamics Package (factory-installed front spoiler with canards, factory-installed rear wing, factory-installed rear diffuser), extensive factory carbon packs, weight saving through factory-installed lightweight wheels, stripped interior with factory-installed bucket seats, and factory-installed AMG Coilover suspension. For collectors the W204 Black Series is the most sought-after regular C63 specification and trades consistently far above regular W204 C63 prices.
In 2015 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W205 C63 as successor to the W204. The big change was technical: the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 was replaced by the 4.0-litre biturbo M177 V8 (shared with the AMG GT line). The W205 C63 produced 476 hp; the C63 S produced 510 hp. For some AMG purists the transition from naturally aspirated to biturbo was controversial, comparable to the transition in other AMG models. The biturbo however delivers substantially more torque and modern efficiency. The W205 was available as sedan, estate, coupé, and cabriolet, with factory-installed Edition 1, Edition 507, and Final Edition specifications as limited variants.
In 2022 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the W206 C63 S E Performance, a fundamental transition in the C63 line. The biturbo V8 was replaced by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder M139 engine (derived from the AMG A45 S) combined with a 150 kW electric motor on the rear axle for a combined system output of 680 hp. This decision was exceptionally controversial within the AMG community: a C63 without V8 broke with the tradition that began in 2007. For the market however the car was a success due to its substantially higher power and modern plug-in hybrid functionality. For collectors the W206 positions itself as a new segment within the C63 line, not as a direct spiritual successor to the earlier V8 generations.
The C63 AMG has seen a complex valuation curve. The W204 with naturally aspirated M156 V8 is increasingly seen by collectors as modern classic; early W204 C63s in factory specification with proven service history are rising in value. The W204 Black Series is in a very high price tier and trades consistently far above original list price. The W205 biturbo retains value for well-specified Edition specifications. The W206 PHEV is still too new to evaluate value retention. For sellers this means a well-documented C63 with proven Mercedes-AMG service history, original specification, and (for Black Series and Edition specifications) confirmed factory specification attracts strong international interest.
W204 C63 AMG (2007-2014, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 V8, 451-487 hp), W204 C63 AMG Black Series (2011-2012, 510 hp, stripped coupé), W205 C63 and C63 S (2015-2021, 4.0-litre biturbo M177 V8, 476-510 hp), W206 C63 S E Performance (2022-present, 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder PHEV, 680 hp combined). Body: sedan, estate, coupé, or cabriolet, depending on generation.
The naturally aspirated W204 C63 with the M156 V8 (derived from the SLS AMG) is for collectors the most sought-after C63 specification due to the iconic V8 sound and pure AMG culture. The W205 biturbo retains the V8 culture with modern efficiency. The W206 PHEV is a fundamental transition and is controversial among some AMG purists, but offers substantially more power.
C63 service is specialist work: for the W204 M156 engine, valve clearance adjustment and known head bolt issues are points of attention. For the W205 M177 biturbo: turbo condition, head gaskets, and cooling system. For the W206 PHEV: hybrid battery status and plug-in functionality. Service at a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG certification is essential.
The W204 C63 Black Series (2011-2012, around 800 cars worldwide) has 510 hp, factory-installed Aerodynamics Package, factory carbon packs, stripped interior with factory-installed bucket seats, and sharpened chassis. For collectors, confirmation via factory documentation of all factory-installed Black Series elements is essential for top valuation.
For C63 collectors, factory designo colours, factory-installed Sport Edition packages, and rare factory colours (designo Mystic Blue, designo Diamond White Magno, factory matte specifications) strongly drive price. For the W205, factory-installed Edition 1 and Edition 507 (specific limited specifications) are particularly sought after.
Recommended for W204 Black Series and rare Edition specifications. Apply via a Mercedes-Benz dealer or Classic Center in Fellbach based on the chassis number. Confirms factory specification, colour, factory-installed packages, and all factory designo options. For regular C63 specifications optional.
For C63 collectors, moderate mileage (under 80,000) with full service history is more attractive than very high mileage. For W204 Black Series and Edition specifications low mileage matters more. Document any trackday participation, factory build sheet, and complete service history.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
