In 1998 Audi acquired Lamborghini from Chrysler. The Murciélago, which appeared in 2001 as the successor to the Diablo, is therefore the first Lamborghini designed under Audi ownership, but still entirely developed in Sant'Agata. The car continued the Bizzarrini V12 engine (last car to use this motor, in Lamborghinis since 1963), in this generation as 6.2 litres (LP580, 580 hp) and later 6.5 litres (LP640, 640 hp, 2006-2010, and LP670-4 SV 2010, 670 hp in 350 cars). Alongside standard Coupé and Roadster (LP640 Roadster, LP650-4 Roadster) limited specifications appeared: SV (Super Veloce, 350 cars 2010), Versace (2006, limited factory package with the fashion house), and the race versions R-GT (24 cars for FIA GT) and RSV FIA GT1. Production ended in 2010 at a total of around 4,099 cars. The Murciélago is therefore the last Lamborghini with the Bizzarrini V12.
The Lamborghini Murciélago was unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2001 as the successor to the Diablo. It was the first Lamborghini fully developed under Audi ownership since the 1998 acquisition. Luc Donckerwolke's design (then head of Lamborghini Centro Stile) retranslated the geometric Lamborghini language: sharp planes, long wheelbase, and the iconic scissor doors that had been a Lamborghini flagship signature since the Countach. The engine was an evolution of the Diablo V12, uprated to 6.2 litres and 580 hp. Permanent four-wheel drive with viscous coupling was carried over directly from the Diablo VT system. Build quality was substantially higher than any prior Lamborghini, thanks to access to Audi's production facilities and quality systems.
In 2006 Lamborghini unveiled the Murciélago LP640 as a thorough update. The engine grew to 6.5 litres and produced 640 hp at 8,000 rpm. The LP designation (Longitudinale Posteriore) referred to the engine position and became a fixed part of Lamborghini's model naming from that point. The LP640 also brought visual updates: new front and rear bumpers, revised interior, and larger air intakes. The LP640 Roadster followed in 2006 with a manually fitted soft-top. For collectors the LP640 in manual specification with factory Ad Personam colour is the most sought-after regular Murciélago specification.
In 2009 Lamborghini unveiled the Murciélago LP650-4 Roadster, limited to only 50 cars. The engine was uprated to 650 hp; the car was offered exclusively in Grigio Telesto with orange exterior and interior details. The LP650-4 Roadster is one of the rarest Murciélago specifications for collectors and trades consistently far above original list price. The combination of limited production, unique two-tone specification, and roadster format makes it particularly sought after.
In 2009 Lamborghini unveiled the Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce as the closing flagship. The engine produced 670 hp from the same 6.5-litre V12, with optimisations that improved power and rev range. The car received a substantial weight saving of 100 kg through more extensive carbon packs, lighter wheels, stripped interior, and sports seats. A new rear wing was also offered in two heights (standard and Aeropack). Around 350 coupé examples were built plus a very limited number of SV Roadster prototypes. For collectors the LP670-4 SuperVeloce is one of the most valuable Murciélagos; concours examples sit substantially above original list price.
The Murciélago has seen a steadily rising valuation curve since 2018. Regular LP580 and LP640 examples in original condition with proven service history sit consistently in a strong price tier. The manual LP640 and factory Ad Personam specifications sit substantially higher. The LP650-4 Roadster (50 built) and LP670-4 SuperVeloce are generally the most expensive Murciélagos; concours examples trade in seven-figure amounts. For sellers this means a well-documented Murciélago with proven service at Lamborghini Polo Storico or a recognised specialist, original colour, and confirmed Lamborghini Certificate of Authenticity attracts strong international interest. The buyer you want is a Lamborghini collector who knows the naturally aspirated V12 culture and values the specific specification.
LP580 (2001-2006, 6.2-litre V12, 580 hp), LP580 Roadster (2004-2006), LP640 (2006-2010, 6.5-litre V12, 640 hp), LP640 Roadster (2006-2010), LP650-4 Roadster (2009-2010, limited to 50 cars), and LP670-4 SuperVeloce (2009-2010, around 350 coupé examples). Each specification has its own price class and buyer pool.
The Murciélago was offered as coupé and roadster. The roadster uses a manually fitted soft-top roof panel with a speed limit recommendation when open. For collectors the roadster is generally scarcer than the coupé and can command a substantial premium, particularly on the LP650-4 (50 built) and confirmed LP670-4 SV Roadster examples.
The Murciélago was offered with an open-gate manual six-speed gearbox or the optional e-gear (single-clutch automated manual with paddle shifters). For collectors and enthusiast drivers the manual version is substantially more valuable, particularly on the LP640 and LP670-4 SuperVeloce.
Classic colours such as Giallo Orion, Arancio Atlas, Verde Ithaca, Nero Pegaso, Bianco Isis, and Rosso Vik are among the most sought-after specifications. Ad Personam specifications (Lamborghini's PTS equivalent) appear on the LP640, LP650-4, and LP670-4 SV and are strongly value-driving for collectors. Original leather with embroidery and carbon packs reinforce value.
Murciélago service is specialist work: the V12 requires regular inspection of head gaskets, clutch (particularly on e-gear specifications), and cooling system. Service at a Lamborghini dealer, Polo Storico, or a recognised Lamborghini specialist is essential. Major service intervals are typically every two to three years, with engine-out service for head gaskets where necessary.
Lamborghini Polo Storico in Sant'Agata Bolognese supplies a Certificate of Authenticity on request based on the chassis number. For LP650-4 Roadster, LP670-4 SuperVeloce, and rare Ad Personam specifications this document is decisive for collectors.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
LP580, LP580 Roadster, LP640, LP640 Roadster, LP650-4 Roadster, or LP670-4 SuperVeloce. Model year, chassis number, and engine number. Gearbox: manual (open gate) or e-gear. For LP650-4 and LP670-4 SV: production number within the limited run.
Lamborghini Polo Storico in Sant'Agata Bolognese supplies a Certificate of Authenticity based on the chassis number. For LP650-4, LP670-4 SuperVeloce, and Ad Personam specifications this document is decisive for collectors; for regular LP580 and LP640 optional but reinforces factory-spec confirmation.
All invoices from a Lamborghini dealer, Polo Storico, or recognised Lamborghini specialist. The naturally aspirated V12 requires specialist knowledge: head gaskets (engine-out service at higher mileage), timing chains, clutch status (particularly on e-gear), cooling system. Major service every two to three years; document all completed work.
The e-gear uses a single-clutch automated manual that is expensive to replace at high wear or after rough use. Document clutch wear report from Lamborghini, any clutch renewal, and keep invoices. For manual specifications clutch wear is less critical but still relevant to buyers.
Paint colour with factory code (Giallo Orion, Arancio Atlas, Verde Ithaca, Nero Pegaso, Bianco Isis, Rosso Vik, or Ad Personam colour), leather specification with embroidery, carbon packs exterior and interior, original wheels (Hermera, Aldebaran, or limited specification), any factory Aeropack aerodynamics on LP670-4 SV.
Photos of build plate with production number (1-50 for LP650-4 Roadster, 1-350 for LP670-4 SV coupé). For collector-oriented sales early chassis numbers and complete documentation are crucial. Confirm any factory Aeropack specification and original wheels.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation, geographic distribution. For collector-oriented sales low mileage in original condition is generally strongly value-driving; for regular LP580 and LP640 specifications an average mileage with full service history is acceptable.
