Tesla has changed the car industry on a scale rarely seen in a single generation. The original Roadster of 2008, built on a Lotus Elise platform with a lithium-ion battery pack, proved an electric sports car was possible. The Model S P85D brought 'Insane Mode' to mainstream culture in 2014. The modern Model S Plaid does 0-100 in under 2.1 seconds and is the fastest production car ever built. Owners of an early or special Tesla know that position at the start of a new automotive era. A Tesla is not sold to just anyone; it is passed on to someone who values the transition.

The original Tesla Roadster (2008-2012) was the car that started everything. Built on a modified Lotus Elise platform, with a 248 hp electric motor and a 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Roadster delivered over 320 km of range that was unprecedented in 2008. Only around 2,450 were built, of which a fraction reached Europe. The Roadster Sport (2010-2012) offered 288 hp and specific Sport components. On classic markets, early Roadsters are regularly sold without context; for collectors the combination of Tesla specification, original battery health (capacity check via Tesla tooling), and proven provenance is decisive.
The auction format brings together buyers who recognise the difference between a Roadster 1.5 (early production) and a Roadster Sport (later production). An original Tesla Roadster in factory colour (especially the rare Pearl Yellow, Mercury Silver, or the limited 'Founders Edition' of the first 100 Sport cars) with proven battery health and complete Tesla service history can command a significant premium. For Roadster sellers, international buyer reach via Octane is essential.
The Tesla Model S (2012-present) has developed through several generations. The early P85 (2012-2014) with 421 hp single motor was the first Model S; the P85D (2014-2016) introduced dual motor and the iconic 'Insane Mode' (later 'Ludicrous Mode'); the P100D (2016-2019) with 'Ludicrous+' was the first production car to do 0-100 in under 2.5 seconds. The modern Model S Plaid (from 2021) with tri-motor and 1020 hp does 0-100 in under 2.1 seconds and is the fastest production car ever. The Model S Plaid+ (announced but cancelled in 2021) and the limited Founders Series Model S (first 1000 built) have their own collector markets.
For sellers of an early Model S (especially P85D 'Insane Mode' from 2014-2015), documentation of battery health via Tesla Service is essential. An early P85D with proven healthy battery (original capacity within 10 percent of factory specs), complete Tesla service history, and original specification is highly attractive to collectors. The auction format brings together international buyers who value the Tesla heritage as the 'starting model' of modern EV culture.
The Tesla Model 3 (from 2017) has built its own market as the world's best-selling EV. The Model 3 Performance with dual motor, 'Track Mode' (from 2020), and specific wheels and brakes has a growing collector market as a modern classic. The Model X (2015-present) with factory falcon-wing doors is a unique SUV. The modern Model X Plaid offers tri-motor specification comparable to the Model S Plaid.
For sellers of a Performance or Plaid specification, documentation of factory-installed accessories (Track Mode pack, Ludicrous upgrade for S, Acceleration Boost for 3) is essential. Low mileage, original wheels, and unmodified battery are decisive factors for collectors.
For Teslas, battery health is the central value topic. A Tesla with proven original battery capacity within 10 percent of factory specs is worth far more to collectors than one with degraded battery. When selling, buyers expect a Tesla Service Mode report or a manual range test at full charge. For the Roadster the issue is even stronger: the old 53 kWh packs can show significant degradation, and Tesla had a specific battery replacement programme for early Roadsters. Document any battery replacements.
For modern Teslas, originality is an important value factor. On Roadster, factory colour (Pearl Yellow, Mercury Silver, Brilliant Yellow are the rare specifications), original wheels, and proven low mileage all matter. On Model S P85D, factory 'Insane Mode' acceleration setting, original 21-inch wheels (vs later 19-inch downsize), and factory Premium Sound matter. On Model 3 Performance, factory Track Mode pack, original forged 20-inch wheels, and Carbon Fiber Spoiler accent drive price. For collectors, unmodified factory specification and low mileage are the two most decisive factors.
Tesla Service Mode (accessible via Service Menu on the screen or at a Tesla Service Center) supplies battery capacity, charging history, and any software updates. For sellers of a collector Tesla, a current Service Mode report is a strong selling point. For very early Roadsters and Founders Series Model S, documentation via Tesla Heritage (on request via Tesla Service) is essential. A Tesla with complete Tesla service history at Tesla Service Centers sells far better than one without that documentation.
