The Porsche 911 Speedster is a specification Porsche has only released four times in modern history. Inspired by the original 1955 356 Speedster, the 911 Speedster offers a unique character within 911 culture: a lowered windscreen for an improved aerodynamic feel, a double-hump cover that hides the roll bars for a cleaner line, and a stripped specification relative to standard 911 Cabriolets. From the G-Model Speedster of 1989 to the rare 964 Speedster (930 built), the very limited 997 Speedster (356 built), and the modern 991 Speedster (1,948 built): each generation has been a collector specification. A 911 Speedster is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the Speedster tradition and values the difference between the generations.
The 'Speedster' name refers to the 1955 356 Speedster, an open-top specification of Porsche's first series production model. The original 356 Speedster was an American market variant with lowered windscreen, no door windows, and a stripped specification for sunny-weather driving enjoyment. The concept was reinterpreted by Porsche in 1989 on the 911 G-Model: a 911 Cabriolet with lowered windscreen and a redrawn double-hump cover that hides the roll bars. This basic concept (lowered windscreen + double-hump cover) has been preserved in every subsequent Speedster generation. For collectors the Speedster line marks a very distinct 911 culture, with each generation released as a collector specification in limited numbers.
The G-Model 911 Speedster was introduced in 1989 as the first 911 Speedster ever. Production was around 2,103 examples in a single year of production. The car used the 3.2-litre engine from the Carrera (231 hp), with a manual five-speed gearbox. The body received the lowered windscreen, the double-hump cover, and a Cabriolet specification that was lighter than standard. For collectors the G-Model Speedster marks the starting point of the modern 911 Speedster tradition; well-documented examples with Porsche Classic confirmation and original colour are generally substantially higher priced than regular G-Model Cabriolets.
The 964 Speedster was built in 1993-1994 in 930 examples, intended to mark the closing chapter of the air-cooled Speedster era. The car used the 3.6-litre engine from the 964 Carrera (250 hp), with a manual five-speed gearbox. The 964 Speedster was offered only with the narrow-body coachwork and in limited factory colours (particularly Speed Yellow, Grand Prix White, Black, and the very rare Mint Green). For collectors the 964 Speedster is one of the most highly regarded 964 specifications; concours examples sit consistently in their own price class above regular 964 Carrera 2s.
The 997 Speedster was unveiled in 2010 as an anniversary specification for the sixtieth anniversary of the Porsche name, with production limited to exactly 356 examples as a tribute to the 356 Speedster. The car used the 3.8-litre engine from the 997.2 Carrera S (408 hp), with PDK gearbox as standard. The 997 Speedster was offered in two colours: Pure Blue Metallic (a specific Speedster blue) and Carrara White Metallic, both with factory-installed badges and accents. For collectors the 997 Speedster, with its extremely limited production of 356, is the rarest modern Speedster and consistently trades in the highest 997 price class.
The 991 Speedster was delivered in 2019-2020 in 1,948 examples, a reference to 1948 (the year the first 356 was completed). The car used the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine from the 991.2 GT3 (500 hp), with a manual six-speed gearbox as the only option. This made the 991 Speedster the first 911 Speedster with racing-derived GT3 engineering, a substantial step up in performance over earlier Speedster generations. The optional Heritage Design Package offered factory-installed GT Silver Metallic paint, white side-door circles, factory stripes, and Heritage interior. For modern collectors a 991 Speedster with Heritage Design Package is consistently priced higher than regular specifications.
All four modern Speedster generations have seen a steadily rising valuation curve since 2018. The 997 Speedster (356 built) is the most highly priced modern Speedster due to its extreme rarity; top examples sit consistently well above original list. The 964 Speedster (930 built) is in a higher price class than regular 964 Cabriolets for classic air-cooled collectors. The 991 Speedster (1,948 built) is more widely available but still consistently above list, with Heritage Design Package examples in a separate higher class. For sellers this means a well-documented 911 Speedster with proven Porsche service history, original factory elements, and factory confirmation attracts strong international interest. The buyer you want is a Porsche collector who values the Speedster tradition.
G-Model Speedster (1989, ~2,103 built), 964 Speedster (1993-1994, 930 built), 997 Speedster (2010-2011, 356 built), 991 Speedster (2019-2020, 1,948 built). The 997 Speedster, with its low production of 356 (a tribute to the 356), is the rarest of the modern Speedsters.
For the 997 and 991 Speedster: factory-installed production number (1 through 356 for 997, 1 through 1,948 for 991). Keep the exact number; early chassis numbers and factory deliveries are more highly valued by collectors.
The 991 Speedster offered the optional Heritage Design Package with factory-installed GT Silver Metallic paint, white side-door circles, factory stripes, Heritage sand-coloured leather, and historical badges. For collectors this package is consistently priced higher than regular specifications.
For the 964 Speedster: offered in limited factory colours (particularly Speed Yellow, Grand Prix White, Black). For the 997 Speedster: almost exclusively in Pure Blue Metallic or Carrara White Metallic. For the 991 Speedster: broader colour palette plus Heritage specification. Original factory colour strongly drives price.
Decisive for all 911 Speedster specifications. It confirms factory specification, production number, colour, double-hump cover, and factory-installed options. For the 991 Speedster, also confirmation of Heritage Design Package if applicable.
For the 964 Speedster: air-cooled Mezger service. For the 997 Speedster: M97 engine service with borescope inspection. For the 991 Speedster: 4.0-litre GT3 engine service (derived from GT3). Service at Porsche or a recognised specialist is essential.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
G-Model (1989), 964 (1993-1994), 997 (2010-2011), or 991 (2019-2020) Speedster. Document the production number (out of 356 for 997, out of 1,948 for 991), colour, and factory specification. For the 964 Speedster: factory build sheet if available.
Essentially mandatory for top valuation on all 911 Speedster specifications. Apply via a Porsche dealer or Porsche Classic in Stuttgart based on the VIN. Confirms factory specification, production number, colour, and Heritage Design Package if applicable.
For the 964 Speedster: air-cooled Mezger service (valve clearance, timing chains, oil sealing). For the 997 Speedster: M97 engine with borescope inspection. For the 991 Speedster: 4.0-litre GT3 engine service. Service at Porsche or a recognised specialist is essential.
Photos of the lowered windscreen and double-hump cover in original condition (no aftermarket modification). For 997 and 991 Speedsters: factory-installed badges, production number plate, and Speedster-specific interior elements.
Photos of GT Silver Metallic paint, white side-door circles, factory stripes, Heritage sand-coloured leather, and historical badges. Factory confirmation via Porsche Classic or build sheet substantially reinforces value. Heritage specifications trade in a separate price class.
Paint colour with factory code, factory-installed wheels (particularly 997 and 991 with Speedster-specific wheels), leather specification, factory-installed badges. For the 964 Speedster rare factory colours such as Mint Green or Riviera Blue are highly sought after.
Number of previous owners, geographic distribution, mileage. For 997 Speedster collectors low mileage and original condition are strongly value-driving; for the 991 Speedster also highly valued. Document any damage history clearly.
