On the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2016, Maro Engel set a 7:10.9 in an AMG GT R, at the time the fastest lap ever by a production rear-wheel-drive car. That lap was no accident: the GT R was built specifically to achieve it, as the hardcore successor to the SLS AMG Black Series within the modern AMG GT line. Under the long bonnet sits the M178 biturbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 585 hp, coupled to a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel steering. The design includes a Panamericana grille (derived from the Mercedes 300 SL that won the Carrera Panamericana in 1952), AMG Active Aerodynamics with variable inlets in the front bumper, and carbon-fibre parts where the standard GT used steel. Between 2017 and 2021 around 8,000 GT Rs left the Sindelfingen factory, plus the limited Pro specification (750 cars, 2019-2020) and the Roadster Pro.
The Mercedes-AMG GT R was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2016 as the hardcore specification of the AMG GT line. AMG positioned the GT R explicitly as the direct spiritual successor to the SLS AMG Black Series, with the same philosophy: substantial power increase, Aerodynamics Package, weight saving, and sharpened chassis for track performance. The 4.0-litre M178 V8 biturbo was uprated to 585 hp at 6,250 rpm, a 75 hp increase over the AMG GT S. Development was carried out intensively at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, earning the car its nickname 'Beast of the Green Hell' (Green Hell is the English translation of Grüne Hölle, the German nickname for the circuit).
The GT R retained the 4.0-litre M178 V8 biturbo (internal engine code M178.980 for the GT R version) with new turbos, sharpened engine management, and revised exhaust for 585 hp. The seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT gearbox was uprated for faster shift times. Rear-wheel drive has electronic locking differential with variable engagement. The key technical feature however is the Active Aerodynamics: an extending rear wing that is electronically controlled for downforce or drag reduction depending on driving conditions, and underbody elements that optimise airflow around the car. The nine-stage traction control (a dashboard knob that adjusts the level of electronic intervention) is a Ferrari manettino-style interface.
In 2018 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the GT R Pro as the most extreme regular GT R specification. Production was limited; exact numbers were not publicly disclosed. The GT R Pro retains the same 585 hp V8 but receives AMG Coilover suspension (manually adjustable for different track settings), Active Aerodynamics package with additional carbon canards, rear wing, weight saving through more extensive carbon packs, and lighter wheels. For track-oriented buyers the GT R Pro is the most sought-after regular GT R specification and consistently higher priced than regular GT R coupés.
In June 2019 Mercedes-AMG unveiled the GT R Roadster, limited to 750 cars worldwide. The Roadster retains the same 585 hp V8, Active Aerodynamics, and nine-stage traction control as the coupé, with an electric soft-top roof mechanism. The production numbers (750 cars) make the Roadster substantially scarcer than the regular GT R coupé. For collector-oriented sales a GT R Roadster in factory AMG Green Hell Magno or factory designo colour is generally priced higher than a regular GT R coupé.
The AMG GT R has seen a stable valuation curve since launch. In 2025 regular GT R coupés in original specification sit consistently in a strong price range, with factory designo and AMG Green Hell Magno specifications in a higher tier. The GT R Pro and GT R Roadster are in a substantially higher class due to their limited production and unique specifications. For sellers this means a well-documented GT R with proven Mercedes-AMG service history, original specification, and (for Pro and Roadster) confirmed original specification attracts strong international interest. The buyer you want is a Mercedes-AMG enthusiast who values the modern AMG track culture and knows the specific GT R specification.
AMG GT R coupé (2016-2021, 585 hp), AMG GT R Roadster (2019-2020, 585 hp, limited to 750 cars), or AMG GT R Pro (2018-2020, limited production with sharpened chassis, coilover suspension, and more extensive carbon packs). For collectors the GT R Pro is generally the most valuable specification, followed by the Roadster due to limited production.
The GT R has Active Aerodynamics with an extending rear wing that is electronically controlled for downforce or drag reduction. Additionally front spoiler, rear diffuser, and lightweight wheels. For collectors, confirmation that all aero elements are original is essential.
For GT R collectors, factory designo colours and the iconic factory AMG Green Hell Magno (matte green, a reference to the Nürburgring) strongly drive price. Other sought-after colours include designo Selenite Grey Magno, matte specifications, and graphic stripe combinations. carbon packs exterior and interior reinforce value.
GT R service is specialist work: the 4.0-litre M178 V8 biturbo, the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT gearbox, and the Active Aerodynamics require diagnostics. Service at a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG certification or Mercedes-AMG Performance Center is essential. Major service intervals depend on specification and use.
The GT R has nine-stage traction control (adjustable via a dashboard knob, similar to Ferrari's manettino), AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive dampers, and AMG Coilover suspension (on the GT R Pro). For collectors, confirmation of factory chassis settings via documentation is essential.
For GT R collectors low mileage (under 15,000) in original condition is generally value-driving, although the GT R also has a natural home on the track. For track-oriented buyers documented trackday history with proven post-session service at Mercedes-AMG is attractive; both markets exist in parallel.
For GT R Pro and Roadster specifications, Mercedes-Benz Classic Center supplies documentation on request of the original specification, packages, and build information. For collector-oriented sales this document reinforces confirmation of original specification.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
AMG GT R coupé (2016-2021), AMG GT R Roadster (2019-2020, 750 cars worldwide), or AMG GT R Pro (2018-2020, limited production). Model year, chassis number, and engine number. For the Roadster: confirmation that the soft-top roof mechanism operates without faults. For GT R Pro: confirmation of Coilover suspension and aero package.
Strongly recommended for GT R Pro and Roadster. Apply via a Mercedes-Benz dealer or Classic Center in Fellbach based on the chassis number. Confirms original specification, colour, Active Aerodynamics, factory designo options, and any AMG Performance Studio details.
All invoices from a Mercedes-Benz dealer with AMG certification or Mercedes-AMG Performance Center. The 4.0-litre M178 V8 biturbo and the seven-speed DCT gearbox require diagnostics. For GT R and GT R Pro: diagnostics of Active Aerodynamics and nine-stage traction control. Major service intervals depend on specification.
The Active Aerodynamics (extending rear wing, electronically controlled front spoiler elements) is a defining GT R feature. Document diagnostic report confirming the system is fully functional. For collectors, proof of working Active Aerodynamics is essential.
Paint colour with factory code, designo confirmation if applicable, factory AMG Green Hell Magno (matte green, iconic GT R colour), carbon packs exterior and interior, AMG Performance Studio details, leather specification with embroidery. For collectors factory designo and Green Hell Magno are substantially higher priced.
The GT R Pro has AMG Coilover suspension (manually adjustable), carbon canards on the front spoiler, rear wing, weight saving, and more extensive carbon packs. Confirm all Pro elements are original and not replaced with aftermarket components.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation (date, location, number of sessions), post-session service at Mercedes-AMG, any damage history. For collector-oriented sales without track focus low mileage is value-driving; for track-oriented buyers documented trackday history is a selling point.
