When BMW dropped the 6 Series in 2018 and revived the 8 Series, not as a successor to the E31 8 Series of the nineties but as a new flagship, BMW M also gained a new top model: the M8. In 2019 three body variants collectively replaced the outgoing M6: F92 M8 Coupé, F91 M8 Convertible and F93 M8 Gran Coupé. Beneath the bonnet sits the biturbo 4.4-litre S63 V8 in two specifications: 600 hp in the regular M8, 625 hp in Competition Package. From 2022 BMW M dropped the regular specification and Competition Package became the only option. M xDrive all-wheel drive with 2WD mode, M Carbon Ceramic Brakes standard, M Steptronic eight-speed automatic (no manual variant). Limited launch specifications: M8 First Edition (2019, F92 Coupé, around 400 cars) and M8 Gran Coupé First Edition (2020, F93, around 400 cars) in Aurum Dust BMW Individual paint with Aragon Brown interior.
BMW M unveiled the M8 model line in 2019 as the new flagship within BMW M, positioned above the F90 M5 (Sedan) and as a replacement for the F12/F13/F06 M6 (Coupé/Convertible/Gran Coupé). The M8 is based on the modern 8 Series architecture (G14/G15/G16, introduced in 2018 as a replacement for the earlier 6 Series). The M8 line includes F92 M8 Coupé, F91 M8 Convertible, and F93 M8 Gran Coupé (four-door Coupé on extended wheelbase). For collectors the M8 represents the BMW M flagship, positioned above all other M models except for M Performance-oriented GTR projects.
The central technical point of the M8 is the biturbo 4.4-litre S63 V8, shared with F90 M5, F95 X5 M, and F96 X6 M. Regular M8 has 600 hp; Competition Package has 625 hp and 750 Nm. From 2022 Competition Package is the only available specification (regular M8 without Competition Package has been discontinued). Coupled to M Steptronic eight-speed automatic (exclusive; no manual version available). M xDrive all-wheel drive is standard, with three modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport (more torque to the rear), and 2WD (exclusively rear-wheel drive, only with DSC disengaged).
BMW M launched the M8 with limited First Edition specifications to mark the new flagship. The M8 First Edition (2019, F92 Coupé, around 400 cars worldwide) has Aurum Dust BMW Individual paint colour (golden tint), Aragon Brown BMW Individual interior, gold M detail in the bodywork, and unique First Edition badges. The M8 Gran Coupé First Edition (2020, F93, around 400 cars) has the same Aurum Dust specification. For collectors First Edition examples are substantially value-adding.
The M8 has a race car heritage: the M8 GTE was BMW M's official endurance race car in 2018-2021, built for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship. The M8 GTE shared the base architecture with the production M8 but had race car-specific adaptations: extended aerodynamics, stripped interior, and P63 V8 race car engine (derived from the production S63). The M8 GTE won multiple WEC and IMSA races and strengthens the sales story of the production M8.
Since production start in 2019 the M8 has seen a substantially stable appreciation curve. Regular M8 specifications sit at price levels consistent with the F90 M5; Competition Package specifications are higher priced. First Edition examples and BMW Individual specifications are in the highest price tier. For sellers this means a well-documented M8 with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original original specification, Competition Package (where applicable), and BMW Group Classic certification attracts strong international interest.
F92 M8 Coupé (2019-present), F91 M8 Convertible (2019-present), or F93 M8 Gran Coupé (2019-present, four-door Coupé). For collectors Coupé and Gran Coupé are generally higher priced than Convertible. Confirmation of factory chassis number, model year, and market version essential.
Regular M8 has 600 hp biturbo S63. Competition Package (available from 2019, only option from 2022) has 625 hp, sharpened settings, M Sport exhaust with valve control, and M Carbon-ceramic brakes standard. For collectors Competition Package is generally higher priced.
The M8 First Edition (2019, F92 Coupé) and M8 Gran Coupé First Edition (2020, F93) are limited launch specifications with production of around 400 cars worldwide each. Package includes Aurum Dust BMW Individual paint colour, Aragon Brown BMW Individual interior, gold M detail, and unique First Edition badges. For collectors First Edition specifications are substantially value-adding.
The M8 is available in a broad range of colours: regular colours (Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Tanzanite Blue, Sonic Speed Blue), Frozen Editions (Frozen Bluestone, Frozen Marina Bay Blue), and BMW Individual specifications (Aurum Dust for First Edition, Smaragdgrun, Macao Blue). For collectors BMW Individual specifications are substantially value-adding.
The M8 has biturbo 4.4-litre S63 V8 (shared with F90 M5, F95 X5 M, and F96 X6 M) with 600 hp (regular) or 625 hp (Competition Package). For collectors, turbo condition, head gasket status, M Steptronic mechatronics service, and diagnostic report are essential.
M8 service is specialist work: turbo condition of biturbo S63, head gasket status, VANOS service, M Steptronic mechatronics service, M Carbon-ceramic brakes status (standard on Competition), M xDrive diagnostics. Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential.
For M8 collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 50,000 for 2019-2021 model year, under 30,000 for 2022-present) with full service history is more attractive. For First Edition, BMW Individual specifications, and Competition Package low mileage is substantially value-driving.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
