The BMW M3 CS is the closing hardcore specification within each M3 generation in which BMW M released a limited CS specification. Two CS specifications exist: the F80 M3 CS (2018, limited production, 460 hp biturbo S55) and the G80 M3 CS (2024-present, 550 hp biturbo S58). Both represent the peak of their respective M3 generation: factory-installed extensive aerodynamics, factory-installed lightweight elements (carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed carbon details), factory-installed sharpened chassis, and factory-installed limited production. The CS status (Club Sport) is for BMW M a specific positioning between regular Competition Package and the most extreme GTS/CRT specifications. A BMW M3 CS is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the BMW M CS culture and values the difference between F80 CS and G80 CS.
The BMW F80 M3 CS was unveiled in 2018 as the closing specification of the F80 generation, shortly before the transition to the G80. Production was limited; BMW M did not publish a specific production figure, but it is estimated that around 1,200 cars were built worldwide. The package includes factory-installed 460 hp biturbo S55 (a 10 hp increase over Competition Package), factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet with factory-installed air channels for improved cooling, factory-installed carbon factory rear diffuser, factory-installed improved Adaptive M suspension with factory-installed sharpened settings, and factory-installed lighter wheels. The factory-installed paint colours were limited to Lime Rock Grey Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic. The F80 M3 CS was available with manual six-speed gearbox or M-DCT.
In 2024 BMW M unveiled the G80 M3 CS, the first CS specification of the G80 generation. Production is ongoing; BMW M has not announced a specific production cap but it is positioned as a limited hardcore specification. The package includes factory-installed 550 hp biturbo S58 (a substantial increase of 30-40 hp over Competition Package), factory-installed 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive (unlike F80 CS which had rear-wheel drive only), factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed carbon factory roof panels, factory-installed carbon factory bucket seats, factory-installed M-specific aerodynamics, and factory-installed lighter wheels. The factory-installed paint colours include Frozen Solid White Metallic, Frozen Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, Sapphire Black, and Brooklyn Grey Metallic. The G80 M3 CS is only available with M Steptronic transmission (no manual option).
The two M3 CS specifications represent an important evolution between the F80 and G80 generations. The F80 M3 CS (2018, 460 hp, rear-wheel drive, biturbo S55) is the closing of the pure rear-wheel-drive M3 tradition. The G80 M3 CS (2024-present, 550 hp, factory-installed 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, biturbo S58) is the most modern specification with substantially more power and factory-installed all-wheel drive as standard. For collectors both CS specifications represent different values: F80 CS for the pure rear-wheel-drive M3 culture, G80 CS for modern BMW M engineering with factory-installed all-wheel drive. Both have their own buyer pools.
The CS designation (Club Sport) is for BMW M a specific positioning within the M3 lineage. Within the F80 generation the M3 CS sat above the Competition Package but below the most extreme specifications (the F80 generation had no GTS equivalent; the E90 generation did have an M3 GTS in 2010). Within the G80 generation the M3 CS sits above the Competition Package and is the most extreme regular G80 M3 specification to date. For collectors who specifically follow CS specifications, this represents a unique collecting opportunity: one CS per generation (where BMW M introduced a CS) with factory-installed specific configuration, production numbers, and factory-installed packages.
The F80 M3 CS has seen a strong valuation curve since its 2018 launch. Well-documented F80 M3 CS examples in factory specification with proven service history sit consistently above F80 M3 Competition Package prices, often with factory-installed Lime Rock Grey or Black Sapphire Metallic in a higher price tier. The G80 M3 CS is too new to fully evaluate value retention, but has consistently traded around or above the original list price since launch due to limited production and factory-installed 4MATIC+ specification. For sellers this means a well-documented M3 CS with proven service history at BMW M Classic, original factory specification, and confirmed BMW Group Classic certification attracts strong international interest.
F80 M3 CS (2018, limited production, 460 hp biturbo S55, Sedan only, factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres) or G80 M3 CS (2024-present, 550 hp biturbo S58, factory-installed 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, Sedan only, factory-installed Cup 2 tyres). For collectors both CS specifications are valuable; the generation determines the specific buyer pool and price tier.
F80 M3 CS (2018) has factory-installed 460 hp biturbo S55, factory-installed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, factory-installed carbon factory bonnet with factory-installed air channels, factory-installed carbon factory rear diffuser, factory-installed improved Adaptive M suspension, and factory-installed lighter wheels. Factory-installed paint colours: Lime Rock Grey Metallic or Black Sapphire Metallic.
G80 M3 CS (2024-present) has factory-installed 550 hp biturbo S58, factory-installed 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive (an important difference from the F80 CS which had rear-wheel drive only), factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed carbon factory roof panels, factory-installed carbon factory bucket seats, factory-installed factory aerodynamics, and factory-installed lighter wheels. Factory-installed paint colours: Frozen Solid White, Frozen Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, Sapphire Black, or Brooklyn Grey Metallic.
M3 CS service is specialist work: for F80 CS the biturbo S55 (factory turbo condition, factory head gaskets, factory-installed walnut blasting), for G80 CS the biturbo S58 (factory turbo condition, factory-installed factory hybrid components on drivetrain). Service at BMW M Classic or a recognised M specialist is essential for collector-oriented sales.
For M3 CS collectors low mileage (under 30,000 for F80 CS, under 10,000 for G80 CS) in original condition is generally substantially value-driving. Document number of previous owners, any trackday participation, factory build sheet, and complete service history. For F80 CS: proof of manual or M-DCT gearbox; for G80 CS: factory-installed M Steptronic transmission as standard.
For F80 M3 CS collectors: factory-installed Lime Rock Grey Metallic or Black Sapphire Metallic (the two official F80 CS colours). For G80 M3 CS: factory-installed Frozen Solid White, Frozen Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, Sapphire Black, or Brooklyn Grey Metallic (the four official G80 CS colours). Confirmation via BMW Group Classic certification reinforces factory specification.
Strongly recommended for M3 CS specifications. Apply via BMW Group Classic in Munich based on the chassis number. Confirms factory specification, colour, factory-installed packages, factory-installed CS-specific details (factory-installed carbon factory bonnet, factory-installed bucket seats, factory-installed M Performance details). For collectors essentially mandatory for top valuation.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
