Compact BMW Ms have always held a special position: closer to the E30 M3 than to the M5 or M8. The M2 line took over that position from the one-off 1M Coupé (2011-2012), first with the F87 M2 (2016-2018, biturbo N55, 370 hp), then with the F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021, biturbo S55, 410 hp, same engine as F80 M3) and since 2023 with the G87 M2 (biturbo S58, 460 hp). The G87 stands out: it is the only modern BMW M without a 4MATIC+ option, rear-wheel drive exclusively. That makes the M2, since 2023, BMW M's purest compact rear-wheel-drive specification, at a time when the G80 M3 and G82 M4 offer 4MATIC+ as standard option. A manual gearbox is available across all generations, for buyers seeking one, the M2 in 2025 is one of the few new BMW Ms still offering it as standard.
BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 in October 2015 as the regular production successor to the one-off E82 1M Coupé (2011-2012). The F87 M2 is based on the E82 1 Series Coupé but with M-specific adaptations: widened bodywork (broad wheel arches), M bumpers front and rear, wheels with M design, and Adaptive M suspension. The engine is the biturbo 3.0-litre N55 inline-six with 370 hp and 465 Nm of torque. Available with manual six-speed gearbox or M-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. For BMW M purists the F87 M2 is the spiritual successor to the E30 M3 and E36 M3 in compact form.
In 2018 BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 Competition as a replacement for the regular F87 M2. The most important change is the biturbo 3.0-litre S55 inline-six engine (shared with F80 M3 Competition Package and F82 M4 Competition Package) with 410 hp and 550 Nm of torque. The S55 is technically more closely related to the M3/M4 than the N55 (which comes from the 335i). Additionally larger intercooler, lighter carbon-fibre strut tower brace, sportier exhaust with valve control, and new front with kidney grilles. For collectors the M2 Competition is substantially higher priced than the F87 M2 (2016-2018) and generally the most sought-after regular F87.
In 2019 BMW M unveiled the F87 M2 CS as a limited top specification above the M2 Competition. Production was limited to around 2,200 cars worldwide. The package includes 450 hp biturbo S55 (a power increase of 40 hp over Competition), Adaptive M suspension with CS-specific settings, M Carbon-ceramic brakes optional, stripped interior with M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 CS), carbon bonnet, carbon roof panel, and carbon interior panels. Paint colours: Hockenheim Silver Metallic, Misano Blue Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, and Alpine White. The F87 M2 CS is available only with M-DCT (no manual specification). For collectors the M2 CS represents the most extreme regular F87 M2 specification.
In 2023 BMW M unveiled the G87 M2 as a new generation, based on the G42 2 Series Coupé. The package includes biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six (shared with G80 M3 and G82 M4) with 460 hp and 550 Nm. Available with manual six-speed gearbox or M Steptronic eight-speed automatic. The G87 M2 is exclusively rear-wheel drive (no 4MATIC+ available, unlike G80 M3 / G82 M4). For BMW M purists this is substantially relevant: the G87 M2 is the only modern BMW M that is exclusively rear-wheel drive in the G generation.
The M2 line has seen a stable to rising valuation curve. F87 M2 (2016-2018) in original specification with proven service history sits consistently in a strong segment; manual specifications are generally higher priced. F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) is substantially higher valued than regular F87. F87 M2 CS (2020-2021) is in its own high price tier because of scarce production and CS equipment. G87 M2 (2023-present) is the most modern M2 and is strongly valued for well-specified manual specifications in Toronto Red or Zandvoort Blue. For sellers this means a well-documented M2 with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original original specification, and (for M2 CS) confirmed original specification attracts strong international interest.
F87 M2 (2016-2018, biturbo N55, 370 hp), F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021, biturbo S55, 410 hp, shared with F80 M3), or G87 M2 (2023-present, biturbo S58, 460 hp). For limited specifications: F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, 450 hp, around 2,200 cars). For collectors confirmation of factory chassis number and production year is essential.
F87 M2 (2016-2018) available with manual six-speed gearbox or M-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) likewise. F87 M2 CS (2020-2021) exclusively with M-DCT. G87 M2 (2023-present) available with manual six-speed gearbox or M Steptronic eight-speed automatic. For collectors and enthusiast drivers, the manual version is substantially more valuable, particularly on the modern G87 where manual BMW M specifications are becoming scarce.
The F87 M2 (2016-2018) has biturbo 3.0-litre N55 inline-six (370 hp), while the F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021) has biturbo 3.0-litre S55 (410 hp, shared with F80 M3 Competition Package). The S55 is technically closer related to the M3/M4 than the N55 and has larger intercooler, lighter carbon-fibre strut tower brace, and sportier exhaust. For collectors the M2 Competition with S55 is generally higher priced.
The F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, around 2,200 cars worldwide) has 450 hp biturbo S55, Adaptive M suspension with CS settings, M Carbon-ceramic brakes optional, stripped interior with M Carbon bucket seats, carbon bonnet, and carbon roof panel. Paint colours: Hockenheim Silver Metallic, Misano Blue Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, or Alpine White.
For F87 M2: Long Beach Blue Metallic (the iconic M2 signature colour), Mineral Grey, Alpine White, Black Sapphire. For F87 M2 Competition: Hockenheim Silver, Sunset Orange, Long Beach Blue. For F87 M2 CS: Hockenheim Silver, Misano Blue, Sapphire Black, Alpine White. For G87 M2: Toronto Red, Zandvoort Blue, Brooklyn Grey, Alpine White. For collectors Long Beach Blue on F87 is generally high-priced.
M2 service is specialist work: for F87 M2 N55 (turbo condition, waste-gate rattle check, walnut blasting), for F87 M2 Competition/CS S55 (turbo condition, head gaskets, walnut blasting, charge pipes), for G87 M2 S58 (turbo condition, M Steptronic service). Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential.
For M2 collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 60,000 for F87 2016, under 40,000 for F87 Competition, under 20,000 for F87 CS, under 10,000 for G87) with full service history is more attractive. For M2 CS low mileage is substantially value-driving; for regular F87/G87 M2 an average use with proven service is acceptable.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
F87 M2 (2016-2018, biturbo N55), F87 M2 Competition (2018-2021, biturbo S55), F87 M2 CS (2020-2021, biturbo S55, limited), or G87 M2 (2023-present, biturbo S58). Model year, chassis number, engine number, and market version (Europe, US, Asian markets).
