Between 2003 and 2022 no BMW M was allowed to wear the CSL label. That label, Coupé Sport Leichtbau, originally used on the Batmobile BMW 3.0 CSL from 1972, then on the E46 M3 CSL, was BMW M's highest distinction for weight optimisation. In July 2022 it returned on the G82 M4 CSL. Production: exactly 1,000 cars worldwide. Output: 550 hp from the biturbo S58 inline-six (40 hp more than M4 Competition). Weight loss: around 100 kilograms compared to the M4 Competition Coupé through carbon parts (bonnet, roof panel, boot lid, front splitter, rear diffuser, interior trims), rear seat removal and weight optimisation of glass and exhaust. Exclusively rear-wheel drive and M Steptronic eight-speed automatic, no manual, no 4MATIC+. At launch the M4 CSL held the BMW Nordschleife lap record at 7:20.2.
BMW M unveiled the G82 M4 CSL in July 2022 as the successor and spiritual heir to the E46 M3 CSL (2003-2004), the last regular M to carry the CSL label. CSL stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau (Coupé Sport Lightweight), a German-language designation first used on the BMW 3.0 CSL from 1972 (the so-called Batmobile). For BMW M the CSL label is reserved for the most extreme, weight-saving-oriented regular specifications. The M4 CSL builds explicitly on this heritage: weight saving, extra power, stripped interior, and rear-wheel drive exclusively. For collectors the M4 CSL therefore represents a substantially emotional and historically loaded point in BMW M history.
The central design point of the M4 CSL is weight saving. Compared to the M4 Competition Coupé with M Steptronic, the M4 CSL lost approximately 100 kilograms. The weight saving comes from carbon roof panels (shared with M4 Competition Coupé), carbon bonnet (unique to CSL, with Power-dome), carbon boot (unique to CSL), carbon front splitter and carbon rear diffuser (unique to CSL), removal of the rear seat and rear seatbelts, stripped door panels with lighter structure, lighter M Sport Magnesium exhaust system, lighter M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 GTS heritage), and lighter glass. Despite the weight saving, the M4 CSL remains a full regular BMW M with standard air conditioning, navigation, and Harman/Kardon audio system.
The biturbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six engine is derived from the M4 Competition (510 hp) and further developed for the CSL with increased boost pressure, newer ignition timing, and CSL-specific software mapping. The result: 550 hp and 650 Nm of torque, coupled to exclusively the M Steptronic eight-speed automatic (no manual specification, no 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive). The acceleration from 0-100 km/h is 3.7 seconds; the top speed is limited to 307 km/h (unlocked via M Driver's Package). The exhaust has a M Sport exhaust with valve control.
At launch the M4 CSL held the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for production BMW M models at 7:20.2 (measured on the full 20.832 km track). For collectors this is a substantially important selling point: the M4 CSL is faster on the Nordschleife than any other BMW M ever built, including the earlier M4 GTS (7:28). The lap record strengthens the M4 CSL's market position as the most extreme regular BMW M specification of its generation.
Since the production stop in 2023 the M4 CSL has seen a strong initial valuation curve. Well-documented examples in original specification (particularly Frozen Brooklyn Grey with factory Alpine White contrast details) trade substantially above original new price. The scarce production number of 1,000 cars, the CSL heritage, and the Nürburgring time together produce a strong collector class position. For sellers this means a well-documented M4 CSL with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original original specification, low mileage, and BMW Group Classic certification attracts substantial international interest.
The G82 M4 CSL was built in 2022-2023 with a production of exactly 1,000 cars worldwide. For collectors this is a substantially scarce production number within the modern BMW M line; by comparison, the E46 M3 CSL (2003-2004) had a production of around 1,383 cars. For the M4 CSL confirmation of factory chassis number via BMW Group Classic is essential.
The M4 CSL is available in three colours: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic (the signature CSL colour with factory Alpine White contrast details), Sapphire Black Metallic, and Alpine White. All three have Alpine White (or similar) contrast details on the nose ring, rear diffuser, and wheels. For collectors, Frozen Brooklyn Grey is generally the most sought-after specification and higher priced.
The M4 CSL has carbon roof panels, carbon bonnet (with Power-dome), carbon boot, carbon front splitter, carbon rear diffuser, and carbon interior panels. For collectors, carbon elements in factory original condition (no bubbles, no cracks) are strongly value-driving.
The M4 CSL has M Carbon bucket seats (shared with M4 GTS heritage) with carbon shell, Merino leather with red-black contrast stitching, and Alcantara elements. For collectors, factory original bucket seats in original specification with Alcantara in good condition are essential.
Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential. Document turbo condition of biturbo S58, M Steptronic mechatronics service, brakes condition (M Carbon-ceramic brakes were standard), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre status, and diagnostic report.
The M4 CSL held the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for production cars within BMW at launch (7:20.2). For collectors, moderate trackday participation is acceptable provided brakes, tyres, and turbo condition are documented. For circuit use intensively used examples are substantially lower priced; proven road use with low mileage is strongly value-driving for collectors.
For M4 CSL collectors low mileage (under 10,000 for 2022 model year, under 5,000 for 2023 model year) is substantially value-driving. Number of previous owners, geographic distribution, and BMW M Driving Experience certification strengthen the story.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
The M4 CSL chassis number and type plate. Specific production batch (of 1,000 cars worldwide), model year (2022 or 2023), market version (Europe, US, Asian markets), and CSL-specific equipment details. Request BMW Group Classic certification in Munich.
For M4 CSL BMW Group Classic certification is substantially value-adding. Apply via BMW Group Classic in Munich via form. Confirms factory chassis number, factory engine number, production date, original original specification, package elements, and paint colour. When in doubt about rarity this is essential.
All invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist. For M4 CSL biturbo S58: turbo condition, M Steptronic service, M Carbon-ceramic brakes status, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre status. For collectors, invoices with diagnostic reports are essential.
The M4 CSL has carbon roof panels, carbon bonnet with Power-dome, carbon boot, carbon front splitter, carbon rear diffuser, and carbon interior panels. Document carbon condition (no bubbles, no cracks) with chronological photos. For collectors, factory original carbon elements are essential.
The M4 CSL has M Carbon bucket seats with carbon shell, Merino leather with red-black contrast stitching, and Alcantara elements. Document Alcantara condition (no wear), Merino leather condition, and carbon shell condition. For collectors, factory original bucket seats in good condition are essential.
Paint colour with BMW factory code: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Sapphire Black Metallic, or Alpine White. Contrast details on the nose ring, rear diffuser, and wheels (Alpine White for Frozen Brooklyn Grey and Sapphire Black, grey for Alpine White). For collectors, Frozen Brooklyn Grey is generally higher priced.
Number of previous owners, mileage, any trackday participation (BMW M Driving Experience participation is acceptable, regular trackday participation with documented brakes, tyres, and turbo condition). For collectors: low mileage (under 10,000 for 2022, under 5,000 for 2023) is substantially value-driving.
