In December 2010, just before the launch of the F30 3 Series, BMW M announced something many enthusiasts had been asking for years: a compact rear-wheel-drive M, closer to the E30 M3 than any modern M. The 1M Coupé appeared in 2011 and 2012, built on the E82 1 Series Coupé chassis, with the N54 biturbo 3.0-litre inline-six from the 335i tuned up to 340 hp. Body: widened by 55 mm, M bumpers, wheels from the E92 M3 Competition Package. Gearbox: exclusively the manual six-speed. Production: around 6,300 cars worldwide, spread across Valencia Orange Metallic (signature colour, around 25%), Alpine White (30%) and Sapphire Black Metallic (45%). No successor carried the 1M name, from 2016 onwards the F87 M2 took over that position as a regular production model. The 1M therefore remains a one-off limited run, designed internally by BMW M engineers, and has been substantially appreciated since 2018.
BMW M unveiled the 1M Coupé in December 2010 as a one-off limited specification. The 1M's design emerged from internal BMW M culture: a group of BMW M engineers wanted a modern successor to the compact rear-wheel-drive BMW M culture that began with the E30 M3. The 1M was not intended as a regular model line but as a limited project. What resulted was a compact M with widened bodywork, biturbo N54 engine (from the 335i, boost-increased), manual six-speed gearbox exclusively, and rear-wheel drive with Active M differential. For BMW M purists the 1M Coupé is the spiritual successor to the E30 M3 and E36 M3.
The central technical point of the 1M Coupé is the biturbo 3.0-litre N54 inline-six engine. The N54 was at launch in 2006 the first BMW engine with two turbos since the M88 in the E28 M5. The N54 in the 1M is derived from the 335i with boost-increased mapping for the 1M: 340 hp and 450 Nm regular, brief 500 Nm via overboost function. The N54 is known for strong character, linear boost build-up, and potential for substantial power increase via software mapping. For collectors, turbo condition and N54-specific service (waste-gate rattle, fuel pump condition) are essential.
The 1M Coupé is available only with manual six-speed gearbox; there is no automatic version. BMW M took this decision deliberately to position the 1M Coupé as the purest BMW M specification of its generation. For collectors this is substantially value-adding, particularly in the modern market where manual BMW M specifications are scarce (the F80 M3 and F82 M4 are the last manual BMW M models; the G80 M3 and G82 M4 are the last available). The Active M differential technology strengthens the rear-wheel-drive balance.
Total production of the 1M Coupé was around 6,300 cars worldwide, produced in 2011 and 2012 at the BMW factory in Regensburg. The market allocation was: Europe around 2,700 cars, US around 740 cars, United Kingdom around 450 cars, rest of world around 2,400 cars. The colour distribution was: Valencia Orange Metallic around 25% (the scarcest and most sought-after), Alpine White around 30%, and Sapphire Black Metallic around 45%. For collectors, confirmation of market version via BMW Group Classic is essential.
Since the production stop in 2012 the 1M Coupé has seen a substantially strong appreciation curve. At launch the 1M Coupé cost around 50,000 euros new; since 2018 well-documented examples have traded consistently far above original new price, with Valencia Orange examples in the highest price tier. The collector class position of the 1M Coupé is strengthened by: scarce production (6,300 cars), manual gearbox exclusively, rear-wheel drive, biturbo N54, and widened M bodywork. For sellers this means a well-documented 1M Coupé with proven service history at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist, original original specification, and BMW Group Classic certification attracts strong international interest.
The 1M Coupé was built in 2011-2012 with a production of around 6,300 cars worldwide. For collectors confirmation of model year (early 2011, late 2012), market version (Europe, US, Asian markets), and production batch via factory chassis number is essential. Request BMW Group Classic certification.
The 1M Coupé is available in three colours: Valencia Orange Metallic (the iconic signature 1M colour, around 25% of production), Alpine White, and Sapphire Black Metallic. For collectors Valencia Orange is generally the most sought-after and higher-priced specification. Alpine White and Sapphire Black follow. For confirmation of paint colour BMW Group Classic certification is strongly recommended.
The 1M Coupé has biturbo 3.0-litre N54 inline-six with 340 hp and 450 Nm (brief 500 Nm via overboost). The N54 is the same engine as in the 335i but boost-increased for the 1M. For collectors, turbo condition, N54-specific points of attention (waste-gate rattle, fuel pump condition, walnut blasting), and boost pressure status are essential.
The 1M Coupé is available only with manual six-speed gearbox; there is no automatic version. For collectors this is substantially value-adding (particularly in the modern market where manual specifications are scarce). Document manual transmission condition, clutch status, and Active M differential service.
The 1M Coupé has widened bodywork (around 55 mm wider than regular E82, with broad wheel arches), M bumpers front and rear, wheels from the E92 M3 Competition Package (nine-spoke aluminium, 19 inch), and dual exhaust. For collectors, original wheels (not replaced by aftermarket) and paintwork in factory condition are essential.
Service at BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist is essential. For 1M Coupé N54: turbo condition, waste-gate rattle check, fuel pump condition, walnut blasting (every 60,000-80,000 km), manual transmission condition, and Active M differential service.
For 1M Coupé collectors low-to-moderate mileage (under 50,000 for 2011 model year, under 40,000 for 2012 model year) with full service history is more attractive. Number of previous owners, market version, and geographic distribution are substantially value-driving.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
The 1M Coupé chassis number and type plate. Specific production batch (of 6,300 cars worldwide), model year (2011 or 2012), market version (Europe, US, United Kingdom, rest of world), and 1M-specific equipment details. Request BMW Group Classic certification in Munich.
For 1M Coupé BMW Group Classic certification is substantially value-adding. Apply via BMW Group Classic in Munich via form. Confirms factory chassis number, factory engine number, production date, original original specification, package elements, and paint colour. For regular 1M specifications strongly recommended.
All invoices from BMW M Classic or recognised M specialist. For 1M Coupé N54: turbo condition, waste-gate rattle check, fuel pump condition, walnut blasting, head gasket status (N54 head gasket points of attention), manual transmission condition, Active M differential service.
The biturbo N54 has known points of attention: waste-gate rattle, fuel pump condition (high-pressure fuel pump), walnut blasting (every 60,000-80,000 km for carbon build-up), head gaskets, charge pipes. Document diagnostic report from a recognised BMW M specialist.
The 1M Coupé is available only with manual six-speed gearbox. Document transmission condition, clutch status, Active M differential service. For collectors proof of original transmission and clutch is essential.
Paint colour with BMW factory code: Valencia Orange Metallic, Alpine White, or Sapphire Black Metallic. Wheels (nine-spoke aluminium, 19 inch, from E92 M3 Competition Package), M bumpers, widened bodywork. For collectors, original wheels (not replaced by aftermarket) are essential.
Number of previous owners, mileage, market version, model year (2011 or 2012), any trackday participation, geographic distribution. For collectors, low mileage (under 50,000 for 2011, under 40,000 for 2012) and proven service is substantially value-driving.
