The Porsche Cayman GT4 is the first genuine mid-engine GT Porsche. Introduced in 2015 on the 981 generation and continued on the 982 generation from 2019, the GT4 represents the moment Porsche decided that the Cayman deserved the racing-derived GT engineering of the 911 GT3. The combination of mid-engine balance, naturally aspirated flat-six, a manual-only specification (on the 981 and initially the 982) and chassis components directly from the 911 GT3 made the GT4 an instant collector specification. For enthusiasts who place the mid-engine purity of the Cayman above the rear-engine tradition of the 911, the GT4 is the most sought-after Porsche specification. A Cayman GT4 is not sold to just any buyer; it is passed on to someone who knows the mid-engine GT culture and values the difference between the 981 and 982 GT4.
The Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 was unveiled in 2015 as the first genuine GT specification of the Cayman line. Until then the Cayman had been positioned as an accessible mid-engine coupé, with the Cayman R and GTS as the most sporting specifications. The GT4 broke with this positioning by installing direct racing-derived components from the 911 GT3: the same front subframe, the same rear suspension geometry, the same brake package (four-pot Brembos), and a new 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine derived from the 991 Carrera S with 385 hp at 7,400 rpm. Manual six-speed gearbox only. Production was limited; around 2,500 examples were delivered worldwide over a one-year production period.
After a three-year absence the Cayman GT4 returned in 2019 on the 982/718 generation. The car brought a new 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine with 420 hp and a 7,800 rpm redline, a substantial step up from the 981 GT4. Like its predecessor, it was supplied with racing-derived chassis components from the 911 GT3, with double-wishbone front axle and revised subframe geometry. Initially manual only, from 2020 also available with PDK dual-clutch gearbox. For collectors the 982 GT4 marks the modern expression of the mid-engine GT concept with substantially improved performance.
The Cayman GT4 is regarded by many as a direct rival to the 911 GT3, at a time when the 991.1 GT3 was PDK only. For enthusiasts who prefer the mid-engine balance of the Cayman over the rear-engine tradition of the 911, and who want to keep the manual gearbox, the 981 GT4 was a unique proposition within the Porsche line-up. The 982 GT4 continued this position. On track performance the gap between GT4 and GT3 is smaller than the price ratio suggests; for road-oriented use both deliver comparable driving experiences but with different characters.
Alongside the road-legal GT4 Porsche also supplied the Cayman GT4 Clubsport, a stripped race specification for track use only, and factory-installed with roll cage, racing seat, fuel system, and no interior trim. Clubsport production was limited and aimed at club racing and endurance events. For collector-oriented sales the road GT4 (981 or 982) remains the most widely traded specification. The Clubsport has its own niche market among track owners and is not practical for road use.
Both GT4 generations have seen a strong and consistently rising valuation curve since launch. The 981 GT4 (2,500 examples worldwide) in original colour with proven Porsche service has traded consistently above original list; low-mileage examples sit in a higher price tier. The 982 GT4 (particularly in manual specification with factory PTS colour) has traded above list since launch. For sellers this means a well-documented GT4 with proven Porsche service history, original specification, and factory confirmation attracts strong international interest. The buyer you want is a Porsche collector who values the mid-engine GT culture.
981 Cayman GT4 (2015-2016, 3.8-litre naturally aspirated 385 hp, manual only) or 982 Cayman GT4 (2019-2024, 4.0-litre naturally aspirated 420 hp, manual or PDK from 2020). The 981 is the first GT4 and holds a unique position as original; the 982 offers more power and more modern engineering.
The 981 Cayman GT4 is manual six-speed only. The 982 Cayman GT4 is offered with manual six-speed or PDK from 2020. For collectors the manual specification is generally ten to twenty percent higher priced than PDK.
For the 981 GT4: Carrara White, Black, Guards Red, Sapphire Blue Metallic, GT Silver Metallic. For the 982 GT4: broader colour palette plus factory PTS options. For collectors factory PTS colours and rare colour configurations such as Crayon, Acid Green, or Riviera Blue strongly drive price.
The GT4 uses engine components from the 911 GT3 and chassis components directly from the GT3. Service requires specialist GT knowledge: timing chains, head gaskets, cooling system, transaxle oil. Service at Porsche or a recognised GT specialist is essential.
For the 981 GT4 and factory PTS 982 GT4 specifications this document is decisive. It confirms factory specification, colour, factory carbon packs, sports seat specification, and all factory-installed options. Apply via a Porsche dealer or Porsche Classic in Stuttgart.
For GT4 collectors, low mileage (under 10,000) is generally strongly value-driving. For track-oriented buyers, a GT4 with documented trackday history and proven post-session service at Porsche or a GT specialist is attractive; both markets exist in parallel.
Note: These factors may influence buyer interest. Value depends on many factors.
981 Cayman GT4 (3.8-litre, manual only, 2015-2016) or 982 Cayman GT4 (4.0-litre, manual or PDK from 2020). Model year, exact engine code, and gearbox specification. For the 982: document the PDK introduction from 2020.
Strongly recommended for the 981 GT4 and factory PTS 982 GT4 specifications. Apply via a Porsche dealer or Porsche Classic in Stuttgart based on the VIN. The document confirms factory specification, colour, factory carbon packs, and all factory-installed options.
The GT4 uses GT3-derived engine and chassis components. Service requires specialist knowledge: timing chains, head gaskets, cooling system, transaxle oil. For manual specifications: document clutch status. Service at Porsche is essential.
Paint colour with factory code, Paint-to-Sample confirmation if applicable, factory carbon packs, sports seats or standard seats, factory aerokit, original GT4 wheels, factory-installed aero components. Original order configuration reinforces value.
Manual or PDK (982 from 2020). For manual: clutch wear and any renewal documentation. For PDK: software update status. For the 981 GT4 only manual is available; PDK 981 specifications do not exist.
Exact mileage, any trackday participation (date, location, number of sessions), post-session service, any upgrades to cooling or brakes. For collector-oriented sales low mileage and untracked is more attractive; for track-oriented buyers documented trackday use is a selling point.
Non-factory exhausts, GT4 Clubsport-style aero modifications, or engine tuning reduce collector value. Document all modifications clearly; keep original parts available for refitting. For collectors factory specification is highly valued.
